Francis John Clowes
« on: Friday 13 August 10 06:16 BST (UK) »
Can anybody help find out what happened to this man after his marriage in 1892. He was born in East Retford in Mar 1868 and is recorded as a medical student on the 1881 census but I can't seem to find any trace of him after the marriage.

Any help would be gratefully received :)

Mr Francis J CLOWES is on the passenger list of the SS Galeka from Cape Town to London, arriving 11 March 1911, although it is noted that he landed at Southampton.

There is also a Mr F CLOWES, age unknown, departing Southampton for Cape Town aboard the SS Tintagel Castle on 6 May 1911, which could be him returning.
(EDIT: On the same ship is a Mr B NICHOLS, who could be the brother of the householder in the 1911 census who is Bernard Parsons NICHOLS, 40, single, born Irchester, Northants, occupation gold prospector. Bernard NICHOLS also appears on ships arriving at Southampton from Durban in 1927 and 1940.)

His second marriage was to Edith Mary Hunt (nee Reading). This was her third marriage:-
First to George Stanton Millard killed himself in Umtali Rhodesia in 1904
second to Harry Rochford Hunt a surgeon who died in Inyauga Rhodesia in 1909

Francis John Clowes was a Battery Man at Shamva Gold Mine Rhodesia (he was in charge of a rock crushing machine). He died in 1914 of Endocardita (an inflamation of the heart wall) after 2 weeks in Shamva Hospital. He was the son of St John Legh Clowes and Hon Elizabeth Caroline (nee Bingham) Elizabeth Caroline's father was 3rd Baron Clanmorris of Newbrook (one of those Irish titles). Their 3rd son Captain Phillip Cecil Clowes took the title and the family lived in Cheltenham.

Not sure who his first marriage was to as FreeBMD lists two possibles in Dec qtr 1892.
If anyone know that would be good

On 16th Dec 1892 Francis John Clowes married Maud Agnes Lane in Hampstead their ages were given as 26 and 24 respectively.

Maud Agnes died young as his second marriage to Edith Mary was around around September 1913 as she was given permission to marry again then.

Hi Hughmar, for some reason I missed your replies on this thread and have only just caught up with the good work you have done. Do you have a personal interest in F J CLowes? My interest is really the first wife but she was hard to track so I was going sideways. Thanks for your help.
