Family Tree Maker
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 19:45 BST (UK) »
I have used the Family Search PAF program for quite a number of years, but have now become more and more frustrated with the problems I've been having recently. I am looking to purchase another program. Family Tree Maker seems to be a very popular choice of members here. But I wonder if someone could answer some questions (that are probably very obvious!)

Are the Family Tree Maker linked to Ancestory and the 'Who do you think you are' Family Tree Maker the same thing?
Do you need a subscription to Ancestory to access all the features?
Any recommendations/hints/advice?

Thanks
Gill

I too have been using PAF and have a really simple question but can't find the answer on search engine
Which software do I need to buy to produce the nice ancestry reports ( ancestry not descendents as I can do on PAF ) which include children in each generation and notes in the narrative. I have seen some of these reports which start with the person you choose and then give all the ancestors and siblings in each generation going back in time and will include spouses of siblings, marriage notes etc. in narrative form, census notes
Please, what software are people using to do this? Am  being dense and PAF 5 will do it or is it FTM or Legacy or another software?
Thanks for your help

Hi gbuttery

and welcome to Rootschat Runcton,

I too started with the Family Search PAF 4 then 5 but as far as commercial products go
I only have experience and use of Family tree maker 2010 and can only comment on what this can do.

You can do all sorts of different reports and charts form any person you choose  :)

It is also linked to Ancestry

I find it an excellent program.

The WDYTYA versions of FTM come with additional discs including parish records, in my experience the extra cost isn't justified as the records are rarely of use to me (wrong area or timeframe).

The functions of the actual software programme are identical whwther you are using a WDYTYA version or a non WDYTYA version.
