I haven't actually got his birth certificate, but I do have a photograph of my grandfather and his brother together showing the difference in their ages. Unfortunately they were orphaned at a young age. My grandfather moved in with a family nearby but where his brother went is a mystery until 1913.

William John and Harold Albert (my grandfather) were both born in East Molesey, Surrey - Kingston is the administrative centre of Surrey.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but did you find anything more about William John Wedlock?

I've gathered quite a bit of information on the Wedlock family, as Henry Wedlock (a School Master in Lee, England) married Charlotte King (my Great Great Aunt). Joseph William Wedlock (their son) was the father of William John who, as you say, died in 1908 (2 years after his wife, Harriet Jane Walden had died).

Cheers,

Nick King

Hi Nick

I am still working on the Wedlocks. Although William John is still eluding me, I am almost certain that he went across the border into the US but after that it is a mystery.

At the moment I am working to try and get back further from Richard, I have two possibilities, but it is almost certain that the Wedlock family did not originate from Bristol and also the spelling, as did often, may have changed. I found, the first and only, a Richard Wedlake born 1768 in Devon. It may be wrong but it is the nearest I have ever found to records I have.

Hope to hear from you soon
Lynne

Hi Lynne,

Yes, William John Wedlock is a mystery - all of the other William Wedlocks in the US Censuses (born in England) appear to be different people. I can't find him in the 1911 Canadian Census either...  ???

I've managed (over the years) to trace back the Kings (as Charlotte King is my GGG Aunt) right the way back to 1720 in Suffolk, but then the trail goes cold.

My interest in the Wedlocks is because my GG Grandfather (Benjamin Coleby King) was a tailor in Beccles in 1864 and was declared bankrupt. He then moved to Lee (the most likely reason being that he was looking for work, and his sister, Charlotte Wedlock, was already living there).

There are probably a lot of references to Henry Wedlock in the Lewisham Record Office (he was the Master of Lee National School and they have a number of records relating to the school there).

I also (relatively recently) found where Louisa Matilda Wedlock died - in 1944 in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. She left probate to Ethel Grace Olding (daughter of Charlotte Caroline Wedlock and Thomas Pitt). What happened to her eluded me for a number of years!

Cheers,

Nick King

Hi, I know this might not be conected to your family of Wedlock,s but I am trying to find records of a Rebecca Wedlock born in Little Walsingham Norfolk ( I think ) who married a John Stoakley 1772 and died in 1815 East Dereham Norfolk England.
I am having great difficulty in tracing the family back from Rebecca and wondered if there was any chance ( v. slim ) you might have any info on this family.
Many thanks
Kay

Familysearch.org will be your friend in this case.

A textual search indicates that there was a marriage between a John Stoakley and a Rebecca Wedlock on 29th December 1772 in East Dereham - it's doubtful whether there will be much more information on the actual parish record (see below), but it's worth a punt. Also, try looking for a baptism for a Rebecca Wedlock in East Dereham.

An additional search indicates that there was a marriage between a John Monk and a Rebecca Wedlock in Little Walsingham in 1805 - both were previously married (so maybe John Stoakley had died by then)?

It's all too easy to try and tie up parish records and assume that the person involved is your ancestor, so be very careful in this respect - try and find additional sources (baptisms, burials, remarriages, removal/settlement orders - search NROCAT (Google), etc....

Familysearch (free to browse) also has Norfolk Archdeacon images:
- Click "Search" on the front page.
- Scroll down until you find "Browse By Location", select "United Kingdom and Ireland"
- Scroll down to "England, Norfolk Archdeacon's Transcripts, 1600-1812" and click "Browse Images"
- Click on "Norfolk"

There will be a list of parishes and available images - it's a case of browsing each image, I'm afraid, but it is worth it...

In addition, Freereg (freereg.org.uk) has quite a good Norfolk representation...

Good luck!

Cheers,

Nick
