Lookup Morgan McSWEENEY, Fremantle
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 10:10 BST (UK) »
Hi all, looking for possible leads on Morgan McSweeney, Irish Fenian transported to Fremantle on board the Hougoumont in 1868 aged 25. I can tell from the Convicts to Australia site that he was tried for Treason in Cork Ireland on 2/5/1867 and sentenced to 7 years after the failed fenian uprising, this site also lists his reg number as 9817. Can anyone tell me what happened to Morgan after he arrived in Fremantle, did he serve his full sentence or was he reprieved like some of the other fenians? Did he stay in Australia or did he move on? Really interested in this ancestor as so far I have been unable to find any information on him or his parents in Ireland before transportation.

many thanks - ken

Thanks for your efforts Ennael, the pardon date and comment to NSW are new info, I also tried a search via the link you provided but no results matching my search for McSweeney/McSwiney are found. Do you know of any online census or electoral rolls that might list Morgan's whereabouts in NSW?

Thanks LoganH, that's interesting, I cross referenced the parents listed on the NSW bdm site with the FamilySearch International Index and while Morgan was not listed on familysearch site it did find some common family names that also tie in  with d.o.b's and geographical locations for McSweeney's that I have in my tree - ken

Any other suggestions as to how I might find Morgan McSweeney, does anybody know of online electoral rolls or trades directories that might be worth checking out?

Hi there

1903 Electoral Roll for East Sydney, polling place Fitzroy  (ie Darlinghurst the suburb is in the ward Fitzroy)
M'Sweeney, Maggie F 40 Darlinghurst Rd, nurse.  I looked at other polling places for East Sydney, did not see Morgan McSweeney, sorry.  1903 was first opportunity for NSW females to be entitled to enrol, it was not compulsory to enrol at that time.

Cheers,  JM
