When you watch old episodes of soaps like Corrie, EastEnders or Home And Away and find characters with surnames that are of ancestors and even think in the fictional world they are distant relatives. Ie Alf Stewart of H&A may be a distant cousin of mine through my Stewarts of Scotland lol. Or the fact that the Branning family in EastEnders have a Suffolk surname.
You have a 5000 page portfolio of BMD certs, poor law records, parish records, census records and emigration records.
You spend hours looking through online poor law records on Ancestry in the hope you may find an entry for an ancestor.
