Must say that the British floor is not as busy as the other floors so have no problem getting a film reader or computer...

AnneMc, do you happen to know where the Irish stuff is?

I'm going to be in Salt Lake City, please God, in a few weeks time ... we're taking a train from Chicago. We'll be a few days there, but I think I'll only get one day in the Library, as OH has other fish to fry!

Hello:

It seems a long time but we drive from home to Missoula (first day) that is 6 hours then the next day to Pocatello Idaho that is another 6 hour drive and the next morning we drive into Salt Lake with is only a 2 -3 hour drive so really is not that bad. Like I said before we like to take our time and do some shopping along the way.

I have driven it in one day with two of us doing the driving, We would change drivers every two hours. I would not do that again. That was a bit much.

Cheers
Anne

I think they have a different mindset in USA.  I recently received an e-mail from someone in USA who berated me because I didn't just get in my car in Hampshire and drive to Cheshire to look at a graveyard.  She said she travels all over USA visiting relatives, flying everywhere. (I must say she did have a very odd attitude, rather boastful about all her different houses around USA). Well if I could fly from Hampshire to Cheshire, cheaply and easily I might do the same.  Flying Heathrow (or Bournemouth) to Manchester and then getting a train, bus or taxi to the area of Cheshire I want, just to look at a graveyard, and then returning does not seem much fun to me.

Lizzie

ps.  My husband and I have already searched said graveyard when we were up there a couple of years ago.

I think the mindset is that they judge everyone doing the same thing as they are (family history research) as being in the same economic bracket as they are; it doesn't always apply. Many Americans would love to come to England, or visit LDS in Utah, but are unable to financially. However, it is true to say that air travel has largely replaced rail for long distance treavel in the USA. I still regard up to a total of 12 hours travel as acceptable for a day's research. When I lived at Doncaster I could just get to Wiltshire RO and back in a day, and have sufficient time there to be useful. I couldn't quite manage Dorset, I could make the round trip, but only had 50 minutes research time and that was on paper. However, Taunton at 4 1/2 hours out and 4 hours back was a regular trip.
