Thomas Gavican
« on: Wednesday 11 August 10 10:31 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am doing some family research for a friend, Mildred.  We are hoping to discover some information regarding a Thomas Gavican (b: c1834 in Roscommon, Ireland).  By profession he was a baker and moved to Dumfriesshire, where he married a lady called Sara(h).  We are hoping to discover what Sara's maiden name was and the date of their marriage if possible.

We would be grateful for any assistance at all.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Michael and Mildred

Hi Ev,

Thanks so much for that.  We have added that information to our records.  Thomas was married to Ann Smith, but we think that he was married previously to a lady called Sara or Sarah who was born c1830.  We think she must have been born in Scotland, but we can't find any record.  Searching the FREE BMD has not come up with anything, but we are not sure if Scotland is represented on this system.

Thanks again for your help - it is much appreciated.

scotland is not on the freeBMD site
scotlandspeople website has the scottish records , official record started in 1855 before that it would be the old parish records(paysite)
the OPR'S records are on the IGI(up to 1875) for births and marriages(free)

is it possible that thomas and sarah married in ireland ?

Hi Ev

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this research for us.

It could be that they were married in Ireland and I have put a query on the Roscommon thread.  We will certainly have a look at the IGI.

You have been a brilliant help to us.

Thanks so much,
Michael and Mildred

Hi Ev,

This is the son of Thomas and Sara - that's great.  We think he had a brother called Thomas too, who was also born in Scotland (date unknown).  He died in Carlisle we believe in 1896.  We have never been on Scotlandspeople and hadn't heard of it before...

Thanks so much.

Hi John,

Many thanks for that - we did not know the baptism date or the church where it took place.  That's another piece of the puzzle solved.

Thanks for taking the time to send us that.
