O'Hara Cottages, Portobello Barracks, Dublin

I believe my Gt Grandmother was born here in 1884; would anyone happen to know whereabouts the cottages/barracks were, please?

I dont see an O'Hara Cottages listed separately - but here is an O'Hara Buildings in the 1880s and 90s, right beside the barracks and at Harolds Cross Bridge junction. The buildings are not labelled on this, but see the area on the c1890s OSI map  Grand Canal Bank, Harolds Cross (press 8 , or click on the 25" historic option to see the correct map)

When the map page starts up , the red cross in centre of map marks the poss. location of the buildings

The barracks are just to the south east of this location.

In 1894 the Thom's listing is :

 O'Hara's Buildings
 Harolds Cross Bridge, Grand Canal Bank

 1. Masterson & Co., tea, wine & spirit merchts, and 1 Terenure Rd.
 2. Tenements
 3. Mr. James Elliot
 4. Mr. William O'Hara
 nine small cottages    (presumably these were referred to as O'Hara's cottages)

Do you happen to know, please,  if O'Hara's Buildings per the 25" historic 1890s OS would be the same street as O'Hara Avenue - as detailed in the 1907 OS?

I think the address for that street/road would be Grand Canal bank or Grove road, but I suppose it could have been known as something else at one stage.

I dont see an O'Hara avenue in either the county or city Dublin street index for 1894 or 1904.

Have you seen that name used on a 1907 map ?

As far as I can see O'Hara Avenue is running parallel to Grove Avenue - and both at right angles to Grove Road; O'Hara Avenue then appears to pass Cross Cottages..

Help please, if possible!

O'Hara's Avenue is shown on modern google maps - it's just to the east of the former location of O'Hara buildings, and runs at right angles to Grove road. It's one of the roads that access Harold's Cross Cottages. The other section of the street which leads back to the canal nearer to the bridge is labelled Harold's Cross Cottages on the modern map and on google street view (the street nameplate is visible) .. but could have been an extension of O'Hara Ave at one time.

The same street is on the 1890s OSI map next to Grove Ave , but not labelled :  O'Hara Ave & Grove Ave (see 25" Map)
