Patrick Brennan - Bridget Rice
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 22:16 BST (UK) »
:) looking for any help with tracing my family roots in Monaghan.

The only info I have is that my Gt Grandfather James Brennan (born around 1862) married Anne Elizabeth Murphy (b 1872?) in St. Michael's, Annayalla on the 2nd of June 1898.
Shortly after they married they moved to Glasgow, James worked as Tram car driver.  they had two children, Mary Brennan b1900 (later married Peter Morgan) and Patrick John Brennan b 1901 (later married Mary Hamilton Burns).
1901 Scotland Census only gives James and Anne's place of birth as Ireland!
James died in Glasgow in 1936 and from his death cert his parents are listed as Patrick Brennan (farmer) and Bridget Rice.
Anne also died in Glasgow but in 1946 and from her death cert her parents are listed as John Murphy and Bridget Markey.

I also know that James had the following brothers and sisters

Bridget Brennan b 16/04/1867 Castleblayney, Monaghan

Patrick Brennan b 16/04/1867 Castleblayney

Francis Brennan b 10/07/1872 Castleblayney

Anne Brennan b 12/07/1874 Castleblayney

I visited Annayalla earler on this year but had absolutely no luck with trying to get a hold of the priest at St. Michael's (I had tried emailing him several times before going).  Was advised by a very nice lady that the priest would not wish to help by letting me look at the marriage register!

Any help would be great ;D

Hello
In reply to your post I hope I can be of some help,
My wife’s  family are Brennans who originated from the townland of Limgar (Lemgar), Annyalla, Co Monaghan.
My wife’s great grandfather was Thomas Brennan born about 1869 in Limgare and his father a John Brennan was also from Limgar.
Do you know the townland that your ancestors came from as there are a lot of Brennans from Annyalla.
On the Cancellation Books about 1865-1870 there were about 9 or 10 families of Brennans living in Limgare, Annyalla, if you need a copy I would gladly email them to you.
I live about 10 minutes drive from Annyalla
Hope this is of some help

Hello and welcome to both of you  :)

Sorry- all questions mainly:
Are there any other details- townlands on the marriage certificate?
Are they just they siblings that you know of and could there be others?
Did all the siblings move or did some stay at home?

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home
shows some records here pre-1864 (baptism records) with parents Patrick B and Bridget R and also birth records post 1864 but no parents so difficulty with the popular surname.
However, there is a Francis which may fit and there is also an Alice from before registration time.
You could send for a birth certificate to check the townland possibly.

There is a Francis Brennan on 1901 census with an aunt Mary Rice and sisters whose names you haven't mentioned so not sure if that is your family. The family are in Croaghan townland which also may help MDuffy to help you.  ;)

Good luck

 :) Thank you both.

Unfortunately I don't have a marriage certificate yet for James and Anne so at present the only info that I have is from my granpa's Scottish Birth Cert.  I have no idea what townland James came from or when he actually moved to Scotland.

My grand parents both emigrated from Glasgow to New York in the 1920's whereas my father emigrated from NY to Glasgow in the 1950's.  My dad died 3 years ago but never really spoke alot about the Brennan side of the family, other than they came from Monaghan and that apparently his grandpa James came from a big family!

I know that James' brother Patrick also moved to Glasgow and got married here in 1899 to a Mary Harkins.

James died in 1945 and Mary in 1962 they had (as far as I know) five children:

Catherine born Aug 1899 moved to the US (Chicago) but never married

Margaret Anne (Annie) born 1903 also moved to the US and apparently married a US Senator

Alice Maria born Feb 1907 married Bernard Flood in 1933

John James Albert born 1915 died 1941

Irene Eleanor born 1918 died 2002

Hello,
well just going from that there is an Alice - as in Family Search so that may be a link.

The marriage is in the indexes on the family search pilot site - you have to cross match the names but there are only 4 James' to choose from and luckily Anne is the first one on the list.
You only need the details re registration- quarter and year and volume and page number.
You can then apply for the certificate to Irish records. You will then have (hopefully) the townlands.

regards

Here's a possible marriage match...although it's in October/December quarter, not June :

 Name: James Brennan
 Registration District: Castleblayney
 Event Type: Marriage
Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1898
 volume Number: 1 / Page Number: 633

 Name: Anne Murphy
 [same index details]

The registration district fits as Annayalla is in the Castleblayney district.
