Hi I hope  someone can help me with some info on Harriet Giles and George Clifton. They married 1/10/1837 in the Parish of Tunbridge. Harriet father was Thomas (labourer) and Georges father was Henry (labourer). There children were Jesse, Louisa, Emma, Ellen and George. Harriet was born in Sussex est. birth year 1816 and George born in Goudhurst est. birth year 1811. Harriet was a widow in the 1851 census and I cannot find her in the 1861 census. I am looking for further info on their parents and family.

Thanking you
Besham

Hi Besham,

Have you considered a remarriage?

I can see this:
Jun 1853 Tunbridge 2a 590
Harriet Clifton - John Groombridge

and a matching family at RG9/492 123 9 (surname Combridge)

Hi Tati

Thankyou very much I will certainly look into this. I am finding it difficult to come up with a birth for Harriett which could lead me to her parents ancestory and as for Cliftons there just seems to be a dead end.

Kind regards
Besham

I think you need the 1837 marriage to start with:

Dec 1837 Tonbridge 5 609
Harriet Giles to possibly George Clifton

It should show their father's names and occupations.

If my guess is correct as to her remarriage to Mr Groombridge, then later censuses show her birth place as either Robertsbridge or Salehurst ca. 1815. The pilot familysearch site (http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch) has a matching christening:
16 April 1815 Salehurst, Sussex
Harriet Gyles, parents Thomas Gyles and Lydia
but it's suggested that she was already age 5 at her christening.

Hi Tati

I have already purchased the marriage cert for George and Harriet and Thomas Giles occupation was a labourer. I have this past week been looking into her mother as Lydia Clapsom and that would fit in with the family search. I have been put off because other researchers have her birth date as 1820 but that of course would be her christening date, and of course I have not been looking for a different spelling for the surname. Thankyou heaps, it is marvelous what a fresh set of eyes and a different way of thinking can do. Have you any ideas on the Clifton family? Hey Tati thank-you once again from Australia.

I wonder what makes them think she was born ca. 1820 when the 1851 census suggests otherwise.

Do we know when George Clifton died and how old he was then? What does the marriage cert say about his father?

Hi Tati
I think George died between 1848 and 1850, there is a notice for 1850 in Ticehurst. On their marriage cert his father was Henry and he was a labourer. Georges age states full age and his trade was a bricklayer. Witnesses for the marriage were Henry Clifton and Phebe Clifton, it looks like Phebe. I have looked up records and cannot find a marriage for these two. Found some great names on the Giles/Clapson side such as Gascoigne and Bridgeland and had a great time adding all these new descendents to my tree. Thankyou once again.
