Loved this episode, Monty Don came across as genuinly interested in all he found out, as was so engaging in his conversations with all the people he had to deal with.  What a lovely man, as said before it just reminds you what is now missing from Gardeners World.

Sadly though I had major problems with about the first 10 minutes, he speaks so softly and the background music was far too intrusive that I missed a few bits that were said.

I would have been interested to know more about the relationship connection to his first wife, and I notice no mention was made of his previous career as a jewellery maker.   I suppose with only 1 hour they do have to be very selective on what information they decide to put out and also have to respect the wishes of the "suject" of the show.

I can't say that this was a good episode for me.  Monty Don kept mumbling - despite rewinding, I still couldn't make out what happened to his brother and sister.

According to my OH it was a car crash

From wikepedia

Don has a twin sister and three other siblings. His twin later suffered a broken neck and blindness in a car crash when she was 19.

As for mumbling, not Monty, far too well spoken to mumble!  ::)

Kerry

OK Kerry, in that case, would you please tell me what Monty said about his brother and sister at the opening of the show ?   I listened to it twice, and I couldn't make it out.  My wife also asked me what he said because she couldn't understand it, and at least one other RootsChatter had problems too !  :)

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Thought it was just me  :-*   rewound it three times and still didn't get it.   I suppose that must be one of the reasons why I gave up on Gardeners World when Alan Titchmarsh left >:(

Actually I was being facetious but I think he said they were in a car crash.  ;D ;)

why I gave up on Gardeners World when Alan Titchmarsh left
And gone downhill ever since.  I liked WDYTYA with Monty Don, but didn't like him on Gardeners' World and that Toby man they've got now is much worse.  They should have just stuck with Joe Swift and Carol Klein (but of course she's too old for the BBC ::)). Now there's someone I'd like to see a prog about.  She started off as an artist, so I wonder what her background was.
