I have just looked this up
-1851 population census, taken on the 30th/31st March, was the first census to ask detailed questions re structure of the household, ages etc. Along with this census two other censuses were taken:- an educational census of all schools (including Sunday Schools) asking about the number of students, teachers and running costs, and a census of Accommodation and Attendance at Worship generally referred to as the Religious Census taken on the 30th March

Hi, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.  I was particularly struck by Monty taking notes.  I have never seen anyone do this before (I stand to be corrected though) and was impressed that he was taking it very seriously and with obvious interest.
I would like to have met Ann Hodge she must have been an incredibly brave lady.

The Ecclesiastical Census was taken in 1851 as well as the population census
The returns for England and Wales are now among the Home Office records in The National Archives (HO 129 ).

 http://www.rootschat.com/links/09fe/   *

In 1851, in addition to the census of population a census was taken of places of worship. Although this was purely voluntary, most places of worship made returns.

Clergy completing the returns were asked to discover 'how far the means of Religious Instruction provided in Great Britain during the last fifty years have kept pace with the population during the same period, and to what extent those means are adequate to meet the spiritual wants of the increased population of 1851'.

You can read more at the National Archives website  *.

I'm sure I spotted Dervla holding what appeared to be a notebook in a couple of scenes although I didn't see her writing in it.

It reminded me of how much Gardeners World has suffered since he left (and I know he had to through poor health). I miss his intelligence, deep thoughtfulness and spiritual calmness - a lot of the time it's descended into trite rubbish since he left the programme.

Carole
I totally agree Carole and that was what made last night's episode so good and kept my partner watching all the way through too, Monty is intelligent, asking some really thoughtful questions and it was so nice to have a calm programme for once.

As for mumbling, not Monty, far too well spoken to mumble!  ::)
