Upper Beeding death 1899

Hi,
I thought I had found the death record of my great great grandmother, Rachel Fry (née Backholer/variants b.1813 Chardstock) in Shepton Mallett, SOM., but this has turned out to be another Rachel Fry of similar age.

The only other alternative is Upper Beeding 30 Nov 1899, Rachel Fry, age 86.

My query is, How come she was in Upper Beeding?

One daughter, Annie, had died in 1893, Torrington, Devon. She was with Annie's family in 1891 in Kent. The daughter's husband and one of the children were in the Taunton area 1901.
Her other daughter, Alice, moved from Chard to Beaminster during this period.
Her son, George, and family were in Camberwell.

Was there any well known retirement home in the area at this time, as there seem to be no relatives in West Sussex then.

I grew up in Horsham which is nearby and i can`t remember there being a retirement home in Upper Beeding. It is only a  small village.   Perhaps she was visiting a friend at the time of her death?

I know the area quite well myself, having grown up in Hove, Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea... with friends in Steyning and Bramber, but no longer have contacts to research the turn of the century there.

It just seems odd, when all her relatives were in the West Country, apart from her son in London/Surrey.....so what was she doing galivanting around a small village in West Sussex at the grand old age of 86?? It's not as if any of them were well-off enough to travel without a purpose.

Perhaps there will be a clue in Upper Beeding in the 1901... someone born in Chardstock ... or I will have to fork out for the cert.

Who knows why our ancestors did what they did?   They definately did not make it easy for us?!!

The name of your relation doesn't ring any bells but I live in Upper Beeding and would be happy to check the church grounds etc. if you have any more info. that would give me a clue,

as you know deaths have to be registered in the Registration District where they occurred this may not necessarily be where the deceased was living at the time

My wife maiden name is Janis Backholer and I believe John Baccaler was a common acestor.

We have been able trace the family slightly further back to a Moses in cornworthy and I was wondering if you have traced the Baccaler tree at all.

I know about David in Australia - his starting point was the research that we did at St Catherine's House, Portugal Street and the various County Records Offices in the 1980s - before the internet. We met his father when he came to England.

Do you know anything about the Henry Backaller who was the minister ejected from Combe St Nicholas during the 1660s - after Cromwell left? We know he went to Oxford and preached locally.

David asked me about Henry Backaller the minister, but I cannot help at all.
I have not done any research in particular about the Backallers, other than that pertaining to Rachel's direct ancestors.
