Formans in Stirling

Hi all. I am trying to find out the children of Archibald Forman and Elizabeth Craig who were married in Stirling on 11 October 1789. The LDS records only show one child Robert Grant Forman, Born 02 Jul 1794, STIRLING. Did they perhaps have a first child named Archibald? Any suggestions where I can check this out?

I am trying to find the birthplace (and hence the parents) of Archibald Forman who is recorded as being born in Scotland 1790. Family memories say he was born in Stirling. He moved to and was married in London and when he died in 1846 he left the "house in Scotland" to his eldest son, also Archibald, in his will. We haven't been able to trace the address of this house.

There is one thing that may be causing a problem with your
research which is spelling.

It is STIRLING, not Sterling.

There was an A. Forman born in Stirling in 1781 which may be who
you are looking for. He can be found on Scotland's People. The web

Oh dear finger trouble there, thanks - only managed to get Stirling spelt right once out of four times - will put the others right. Unfortunately our Archibald Forman was born around 1790 according to all the census returns completed, and also his death certificate.

I can now cofirm that Archibald Forman and Elizabeth Craig had a son, also called Archibald, who moved to London in his early 20s and married Catherine Berry in 1816. This answers my original question. Archibald and Elizabeth also had another son Robert Grant who was baptised in 1794.

Many of the birth, marriage and death records at that time are not available. Does anyone know of a record of burials in Stirling around that time that might give us more information on Archibald and Elizabeths and their family history - we know that Elizabeth was deceased by April 1816.

Hi all,

I have now found that the Central Scotland Family History Society publishes some excellent handbooks listing burials in Stirling and other parishes up to 1874. There are quite a few members of the Forman family listed in the Stirling and Logie parishes but unfortunately not Archibald and Elizabeth who perhaps are buried in a family lair.

Before buying any books, try this web site:-

www.memento-mori.co.uk/  They have photographs and details of most of the cemeteries
in that area.  Photographs can be obtained at a very reasonable cost, which means you not
only have the information, you have a photograph of the grave as well.

In addition, they are the most helpful people I have ever encountered in my family research.
They will answer all your questions to the best of their ability and there is no charge for that. Just for the photograph.  The site contains an index to each cemetery that they have details for.   I would recommend checking them out first.

Hi all, Thanks for the suggestion Rob. Unfortunately  Mori couldn't help nor could the Stirling Council archive services. It doesn't look as if we will ever find out what happened to Archibald Forman and his wife Elizabeth Craig.

The property mentioned in my first message was in Broad Street, Stirling and was owned by Elizabeth Craig and inherited by her son when she died via an inquest held on 10 April 1816.

 This property in Broad Street was originally owned by a William Cheyne music master and his wife Catherine Nicoll. It was assigned to them on 30 August 1726.  Elizabeth Craig inherited the property on the 24 November 1789 but we haven't been able to locate the sasine dealing with the transfer of the property in 1789 or any link with the family of William Cheyne  or Catherine Nicoll.

However, we have been able to find out more about the Forman ancestry back to the late 1500s thanks to a chapter in a book published by a distant relative in Australia, the title of the chapter is  "The Forman family of Logie Parish". It is amazing what you can find out with internet searches!
