Hepworth Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 12:32 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the family of my gg grandmother.  Her name was Martha Hill and she was born 1837 in Wetherby.  She married Robert Winter in 1856 but he died sometime between that date and 1861 as Martha is shown on the 1861 census as being a widow and had a son Thomas.  Martha then married Arthur Hepworth and they had 4 children, Mary born 1863, Herbert 1870, John 1872 and Percivale 1874 they all appear on the 1881 census but by the 1891 census Mary and Percivale are missing.  I have can't find anything out about Mary or Percivale.  In 1881 their address was 9 Belle Vue Road, Leeds and Arthur was a dealer in fine arts, their address in 1891 was 111 Belgrave Bradford.  Can anyone tell me where I would be best to look for Mary and Percivale and also a date of death for Martha's first husband Robert Winter.  I live in Scotland and it is easy to obtain copies of birth/death and marriage certificates through Scotlands People.

Hi

If Martha's son was 2 in 1861, the window of Robert's death narrows to between 1858 and 1861. There is the death of a Robert Winter registered 3rd quarter 1860 in Pontefract West Yorkshire 9C 39.  (from A****try)

Hi Kathleen, Robert Winter's death should be on freebmd  and between 1856 and 1861 as you say. Once you have the reference number you can order the cert if you wish. 7GBP. Even if you don't buy the cert you will have the year and quarter of his death.

You could also look on this site for Mary and Percival's deaths.  Are they on 1891 census?

Hi again

Given Mary's age in 1891 I would think there is a good chance she may have marrried between 1881 and 1891. So it may be you will need to check for a marriage between those dates!!

I have managed to trace more of the Hepworth family.  The Arthur Hepworth that I was looking for was born in Leeds and his father John Doughty Hepworth was a surgeon.  If there is anyone interested in this family then drop me a line and I will be able to e-mail you all the family details

Kath,

There is a Mary A. Hepworth on YorkshireBMD who married Henry Armitage (no relative as far as I know, but Henry runs in the family) at Leeds Registered Building in 1882. And there are a couple of other possibles in 1885 and 1888.

No marriages for Percival, but a Percy L. Heworth (No P) died in 1887, Leeds West. Freebmd reveals he was Percy Leonard.
