St Michael Battersea
1888 May 9, Harry Greville, s/o Henry John & Ethel Maud CUMBY, 62 Silcott Road, Mercantile Clerk, born 1888 Feb 3. Died same year according to FreeBMD.

Five other CUMBYs baptised at same church on same day, all adults or older children of William Adolphus and Matilda Cordelia CUMBY. Henry John would appear to be their son as well according to census.

There is a William Harry CUMBY born Mar qtr 1887 Wandsworth, who died Sep qtr 1887 Wandsworth. More than likely a son of Henry John and Ethel as well, which would mean they were probably together from 1886 or even 1885.

Can't see any marriage anywhere, or any sign of them, or son Harold born 1889, in 1891. Henry John is around in 1861, 1871 and 1881. If he was a mercantile clerk, he may have been out of the country.

I see in 1901 that Harold is known as Frederick Harry, and as you say is in a poor law school in Berkshire, not with his mum and her yuonger children.
His place of birth is given as 'unknown' which implies there isnt much contact with his mum.

I do just wonder about this entry in 1891:

RG12 452 108 32
25 Mascotte Str Putney

Charles White 54 Harness maker bn Shevinton Berks
Matilda wife 53 bn Rettenden Essex
Maud E something 5 neice bn Putney
Frederick Gambie  3 'children' bn Putney

Any chance this Fredk could be Harold? MAybe just a red herring, but there is a Berkshire connection and he was born in Putney (Wandsworth reg district)
No idea of his relationship to the Whites!

The two children are bracketed together as
Niece)
Child )

so possibly someone was trying to indicate that they were children of a niece (or nieces)? 'Child' has been made plural, apparently as an afterthought.

Charles White's place of birth is Steventon.
