Burnside - Isle of Wight
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 03:53 BST (UK) »
Hello everybody,

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction with this.  I have an ancestor who joined the british army and was posted to the Isle of Wight.  It seems he may have married a Sarah there and that possibly she is from there.  No idea of her name.  However they had a daughter Sarah born there baptised 16th April 1809.  After this he was posted to NSW Australia where he and his family remained.

Am wondering what parish records I can search which are on the IGI or are they somewhere else.  Any help appreciated in possibly finding the a marriage for Ambrose Burnside and Sarah.

This site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

will give you an indication of which IOW parishes are included on the IGI and you can searchthem from there.

The baptism shows up on the LDS record search pilot:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

but sadly nothing else - no marriage or further baptisms.

Have a look at the Hampshire resources board for an indication of other online resources for the Isle of Wight.  Otherwise, you may have to request a search from the record office.

Thanks Nell.  The pilot site is where I also found the baptism.   Will look into your other suggestions.

Much appreciated, Val

Hello Val

Just saw your post and want to thank you for solving a mystery for me regarding  Ambrose's daughter Sarah's birth.

Sarah is my GGG grandmother. She was shown as BC in some Census records and there were claims she was 99 (born in Yorkshire) when she died in 1900 but now we know the truth.

I also want to thank you for your post on the Burnside travellers forum a few months ago for helping to sort out all the Ambroses.

Did you make any progress in finding a marriage for Ambrose and wife Sarah?
We believe their Eldest child Elizabeth must have been born before 1805  during the time Ambrose was with the 82nd regiment and the regiment was in Minorca or Ireland.
