Thomas COUCH and the COUCH family - Langtee area Devon
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 21:47 BST (UK) »
Good evening!

I'm researching a Thomas Couch. He married Sarah Tuxworth in Goulceby in 1829 (I have the full record).  The 1851 census states that he was born (I think as it is not 100% clear) in Langtree, Devon.  This is where my research goes cold.  Any information on him and his family in Langtree (presumably from parish records and the like) would be greatly appreciated.  I'd also be interested in understanding how and why he travelled all the distance from Devon to Goulceby in Lincolnshire.

Yours hopefully

Bilham

How old is he in 1851 as we need a birthyear

What was his occupation in 1851 as that may be a hint as to why he travelled to Lincs

Hi Carol

Thanks for the response, sorry for the delay my local server took the day off!

In 1851 he was aged roughly 52.  The census form is quite difficult to read but I think it says that he is a miller.

The 1841 census is clearer (he was in Tealby Lincolnshire at that time) and shows him as a miller.

Thanks for your interest.

Bilham

FamilySearch shows baptisms to James Couch and Dorothy in Buckland Brewer, about 4 miles from Langtree:

James 1788 *
Margaret 1786
Elizabeth 1791
Susanna 1793
Joseph 1793

(They are the only Couch baptisms in batch C05004-1.)

These could be siblings of Thomas.

* Indeed, in 1851, James Couch, born c1789 in Buckland, Devon (transcribed by Ancestry as "Ruckland") is living in Claythorpe, Louth reg dist, Lincolnshire with his wife and children, all born in Lincolnshire.

James Couch married Sarah Cook, 1827, Goulceby, Lincolnshire.

They are the only two Couch marriages in Goulceby at familysearch.

James and Sarah had daughter Ann, baptised 1827 and buried 1829, in Goulceby:

I would venture to guess that it was the parents of Thomas who moved the family to Lincolnshire.

There are several Ancestry/Mundia trees with Thomas in them, one at least showing parents James and Dorothy and brother James.

Maybe Bilham has managed to find all this by now -- but in any case maybe it will help Marion!

The parishes of Buckland Brewer and Langtree adjoin each other. The village centres are about 4 miles apart but both parishes are very scattered with a lot of outlying farms and cottages, so the family probably didn't move very far for Thomas's birth. The distance from Langtree to Lincolnshire is considerable and not a direct journey even today. I wonder why they moved and how they travelled?
