Looking for Mary Hoggarth
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 02:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am looking for a christening for Mary Hoggarth.  She married Johnson Nicholson in Kilham in 1820.  According to the 1841 census where her residence is Kilham, she was born about 1806 (it only says in Yorkshire).   I have found several of Johnson and Mary's children were christened in Kilham at the parish church ( according to the IGI ) but I don't see Mary.  I am looking to find her parents names.  They were not mentioned on the entry of marriage that someone kindly looked up for me.  Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

When did she die?  If she was alive in 1851 that would give place of birth.

Hi Andrea,
Her husband Johnson remarried in 1845.  There is a death for a Mary Nicholson in 1842, district Driffield, so I think that is probably her.

Mary Hoggarth was under 21 when she married, the marriage record, not IGI, states she married with consent of her parents.

From her marriage record in my possession I can state, that the marriage was  on 10th September 1820, between Johnson Nicholson, a farmer's servant, and Mary Hoggarth, spinster, by banns with consent of parents.

Might I suggest you have a look at http://yorkshireparishregisters.webs.com/parishregisters.htm, who have transcribed the baptisms at Kilham. It's easy to get them, they are transcribed into excel format.

Mary Nicholson wasn't  buried at Kilham, but a Johnson Nicholson was, 8 December 1857, aged 60. The only Mary Nicholson buried at Kilham was one in 1819, so after the marriage of Mary to Johnson Nicholson.

penny,

I have this record:

There is this marriage at Kilham in 1845:- Source: Marriages at Kilham, from http://yorkshireparishregisters.webs.com/parishregisters.htm

Nicholson   1845   Page 31, No 62, January 25th 1845 - Marriage solemnized by banns in the Parish of Kilham in the County of York.  Johnson Nicholson of full age, widower, labourer of Kilham [no father listed] and Elizabeth Johnson of full age, spinster of Kilham, father William Johnson, labourer.   Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by me W D Tyson, Curate.  This marriage was solemnized between us, Johnson his X mark Nicholson and Elizabeth Johnson in the presence of us, John Prudames, William Goforth, Richard Ashton and Richard Maltby

If you want the baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of William then in IGI there is a baptism in 8 November 1803, daughter of William & Ann, and that family were in Kilham in 1813 have children baptised-William was a mole catcher, according to the baptismal records, but I don't have the baptisms for Kilham prior to 1813, try http://yorkshireparishregisters.webs.com/parishregisters.htm

Penny,

Further to my last message, I see that Elizabeth Johnson, wife of Johnson Nicholson, according to census of 1851, was born in Kilham about 1804, in which case this is her burial, at Kilham.

Nicholson   1890   Page 103, No 818 - Jan 29 1890 - Burial of Elizabeth Nicholson of Kilham, aged 86 yrs.  J. Crosland, Curate  (source Kilham burials: http://yorkshireparishregisters.webs.com/parishregisters.htm)

On that census of 1851, the only child at home with Johnson Nicholson & his new wife Elizabeth Johnson, is an Ann Nicholson, which as you no doubt are aware was the child of John Nicholson and his wife Mary Hoggarth. (baptism 26 February 1841 at Kilham-same source Kilham Parish Registers-baptisms 1813 - 1891 from http://yorkshireparishregisters.webs.com/parishregisters.htm )
