Wantage Marriage
« on: Tuesday 03 August 10 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for the marriage of Benjamin Ley (Laye, Lee!!!)  in Wantage to Hannah.

Their first son was baptised in Wantage in 1779 and then they had another eleven baptised in Didcot.

Benjamin was baptised in East Hendred in 1755.

Thanks for any help

Kind regards

Peony

He may not have married in Wantage. I have looked at the online Phillimores marriages for Wantage and cannot see a Benjamin Lee/Ley/Lay. Although there are several Lee;s and Lay;s, none are married to a Hannah, nor have the first name of Benjamin. The original [or photocopied] parish records would be better and may contain more information.Also other churches/denominations may be the answer. John.

First child's baptism can sometimes be a red herring, as it was quite common for girls to go to their mother (or another female relative) to have their first baby.  They might have the baby baptised in their home parish, but often they didn't.  Have you looked for the marriage anywhere else yet?

Hi Peony,

The only marriage I can find in my Wantage PRs (OFHS) is;

7-5-1741 - Banjamin Lay to Mary Hatt

Not quite what you want.

Hi

Thanks for all your answers.  I looked for this a couple of years ago, but I don't think I looked for all the varients of Laye ie Lee.  So I will start off with all the villages between Didcot and Wantage then work my way up!!   I was just hoping that the first baptism was a signpost.

Kind regards
