John William Glover of Dublin.
« on: Tuesday 03 August 10 15:56 BST (UK) »
Hi
I just discovered that my Uncle Colin was related to John William Glover, composer of "Moore's Irish Melodies" in 1859. John was born on 19Th June 1815 and died 18Th Dec 1899 in Dublin. I believed he never left Dublin.

Uncle Colin's grandmother Winifred Marion Theresa Glover was brought up by her grandfather Robert Edwards.
Winifred's parents were William Ferdinand Glover and Marion Edwards, William was an musican and he married Marion Edwards in Yarmouth, Norfolk, England

William and Marion been travelling around in UK, worked in theatres and they finally ended up in USA and settled there in Minnesota in 1894. I just discovered Marion and William had 3 children (Winifred was one of them) but I cant find two children. William and Marion left 3 children behind in England and settled in USA.

I would appreciate any help on the Glover family, whereabout they were born as William was also born in Dublin in Sept 1849. Did William have any siblings and who was John William Glover's wife? Any info on Glovers relating to Prof. John. W. Glover? I tried to find but I have hit the brickwall.
Kind Regards
Kerry Miller

Hi Cathy

Yes thats the same family. I have checked, Robert was with his parents and Winifred was with her grandfather (Marion's father) in that same year in 1891.
So now its two children Robert and Winifred. One more child missing. In 1900 USA census it is stated that William and Marion had 3 children and they are "living" William and Marion left England in 1894 and settled in Minnisota, USA then after that they just disppeared again.

Hi Heywood,

Yes I have read "Jimmy Glover's book" it didnt give out much information on his family  :( Jimmy mentioned William Ferdinand Glover once in it and never said he was a brother or anything like that. He mentioned his father was John W. Glover being well known musican in Dublin. So I had to assume William and Jimmy were brothers?

I tried to google up on John Glover but to my surprise not alot of information about John despite he was being an famous composer  ??? how strange!

Thanks so much for your help
Best wishes
Kerry

Didn't Thomas Moore write the songs?

It looks as though John Glover was an editor

Hi Heywood,

Yeah thank you!
I better check out this Jimmy Glover, apparently he was all over the world especially to Paris due to his job being an musican. He said his two aunts were also musicans. Its real shame he didnt talk much in details about his family in his book    :(

Hello Kerry,
this is what i know of your GLOVERs .....

John William GLOVER (1815-1899) was a music teacher, lecturer, and organist at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin, and the Editor of Moore's Irish Aires. He married Catherine WADE (no date), they had children, Ferdinand, Lena, Emilie, Mary (she married James MACKAY), and William Frederick (he married Marion EDWARDS). The famous James M (Jimmy) GLOVER of Drury Lane Theatre was the son of Mary GLOVER & James MACKAY. Marion GLOVER nee EDWARDS was last heard of in Chicago circa 1911 and William Frederick GLOVER died in America or Hawaii circa 1913.

I hope this advances your research somewhat. Good luck.

Robert GLOVER, Australia (no known relationship to the above family)

Hi Robert,

Thanks so much for your info on my Glovers.
Yes have their children, just discovered the eldest son Ferdinand died at age of 23 years old. And Lena was short for Madeline. And its William Ferdinand not Frederick. Yes he died in 1917 in New York, USA. Still cant find his wife Marion nee Edwards' death. Emilie died in New York. Madeline died in Southampton, England. I have their newspapers clippings. There's another daughter Elizabeth, she died in New York, USA.

Do you know anymore about a daughter Mary who married James Mackay? I already know about Jimmy. His book mentioned a brother. Do you know any info about his brother?
I have a Mary Jane Mackay and she had 2 children who were born after Jimmy. I dont know if she was the same Mary.

Thank you so much for your info, it helped!
Best Wishes
Kerry
