Great Oakley/Beaumont cum Moze parish registers/MAYHEW/WYATT
« on: Tuesday 03 August 10 08:14 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate help, please, in establishing the birth/baptism dates of John Mayhew and his wife, Emma (Wyatt), and Emma's burial details. I think they were both born at Great Oakley, Essex, John in 1830 and Emma in 1838. They married in 1860 (I don't yet know where) and seem to have spent their entire married lives at Moze Cross, Beaumont. John died in 1914, aged 84, and Emma in 1930, aged 92. John was buried in Beaumont St Leonard's churchyard on October 14, 1914. Was Emma buried there, too, or at Great Oakley, and when? Unfortunately I can't get to Essex RO to find out.

It would seem that Emma's birth info should be discoverable via the usual generally available sources, but I haven't been able to find it. John's birth, being pre-1837, must lurk in pre-Civil Registration territory, into which I haven't yet ventured deeply. Presumably it yields entries in parish registers only, and there's no documentation to be had? Please forgive and excuse my ignorance and naivety on this subject. I am pretty well a beginner at this fascinating pursuit. But I am learning!

The only Emma WYATT Birth Reg I can find is ;
Emma WYATT, September 1841, Braintree, 12 27
It doesnt seem to work with anything unless her Parents were not married when the Children were born?

1841 Census
Great Oakley, Essex
HO107/338/21/Great Oakley
George WYATT, 29, Ag lab
Sarah, 25
Ellen, 5
EMMA, 2
All born in County

By 1851 Emma has extra siblings;
James 1843
Herbert 1846
Anna 1849
1861 EMMA is not at home so looks like she the right one married John Mayhew.
Extra Siblings born;
Alfred G 1852
Zahariah 1854
Isaac 1858
Charlotte 5mths

With my resources I cannot find any Christenings/Births or Marriages as there is nothing on IGI, Pilot or FreeREG.

Hopefully someone with access to Parish Records will continue with what I have found ;)

All Saints Gt. Oakley
Bap. 23 Feb. 1831 John son of Joesph  and Mary MAHEW sic.  labourer

Strangely there is no baptism for Ellen or Emma WYATT although there is for James and Herbert,  half way down the relevant page  an entry had been left blank except for the name of the cleric and NB, but there is no indication of what the note was.

John and Emma were not married in Gt. Oakley.

A little more to note.

Emma's parents George WYATT and Sarah SMITH  were married at Gt. Oakley.
21 Feb. 1836 after Banns, both made their X.
The witnesses were John STARLING and Mary FROST her X.

Thank you, Trish and Jebber, for all that information. I am grateful to you both. A lot to consider there. Some of the census entries and all of the parish records are new to me.

I did know about the John/Emma wedding index reference and will send for the certificate. As John and Emma were not married at Great Oakley, it's possible they were wed at St Leonard's, Beaumont.

Otherwise, it seems that Emma will continue to elude me. It's odd that there's no record of her baptism, and even odder that there's a blank entry that might, just might, refer to her and her sister Ellen. How intriguing is that NB and how satisfying it would be to discover what it said!

Could it be that they were baptised at Beaumont?

Oh, and re. John's baptism, was his father's name really recorded as Joesph, or is that one of those typist's hiccups that I sometimes suffer?
