James Ford (Rickmansworth?) - Look up please
« on: Monday 02 August 10 19:48 BST (UK) »
My Gt Gt Grandfather is James Ford who married Elizabeth Crawley in Sarratt on 27 October 1792.

I know they had 2 sons - Francis born 1812 and Henry born 1814 but I don't know if they had any other children.

I would also like to know James dob and who his parents were.  If anyone can help I would be grateful.

Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan

From the IGI on Family Search there are a possible 11 baptisms for James & Elizabeth's children, including a Francis & Henry.

All were baptised in Rickmansworth apart from William who seems to be the first born.
William born 30 Jan 1793, bapt 31 March 1793 Sarratt.
Jonathan bapt 14 Dec 1794
Fanny bapt 23 July 1797
Maria bapt 2 March 1800
Thomas bapt 10 April 1803
Stevens bapt 24 Nov 1805
Samuel bapt 17 April 1808
Francis bapt 12 Jan 1812
James bapt 26 Mar 1815
Henry bapt 8 Mar 1818
Charlotte bapt 2 July 1820.

This could be the bapt for James himself, 21 Feb 1768 to William & Martha in Rickmansworth.

There is a lot of information for the Ford name on the IGI & also the Family Search Pilot Site.

Hope this is some help.

Thanks Maddie.

I'm obviously doing something wrong on Family Search because I couldn't find anything.  Will try harder!

Oh dear. :)

If you put in the Father & Mother search boxes on the IGI James Ford & Elizabeth & Herts for the County I think the majority of names that come up are all the same Ford family. Certainly the son James c1815 mentioned seems to have married an Eliza & is carrying on the family in Chorleywood. :D

From my own research I have found that the IGI is pretty well accurate for much of Hertfordshire particularly Rickmansworth.

If I can help any more just shout.

Hi Maddie

Thanks to you I've got a lot of info on the above, but I'm now stuck on a later branch of the family.

I have searched the 1881 census on every website I can for James Ford (born Sarratt1852), his wife Elizabeth (born Rickmansworth1853) and their children Alfred James (born 1876), William George (born 1878) and Francis (born 1879).  James & Elizabeth were married in Kings Langley in 1875 and their address was given as Chipperfield.  In 1891 they were in Elstree Village but I have no idea where they were in 1881.

Hope you or someone else can help.

Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan

Lucky it's the 1881 census that you are having trouble with as I don't have access just now to any other. ;D

Try James FINCH, wife Elizabeth, Alfred 4, William 3 & Francis 1.

 13 Cottage, Common Wood, Watford.

RG11 piece 1438 folio 70 page 14.

Strange thing, both Family Search & Ancestry have the name as Finch, hopefully you can check the image. I'm sure it's them. ???

Hi

I agree with Maddie, it's FORD mis-transcribed as Finch.

I wonder if the Cart & Horses served the HUGE steaks then that  they're famous for?   :-)

Many thanks for the confirmation Ray, no wonder people "go missing" if no one transcribes correctly. :P

Well, no wonder I couldn't find them!  I was beginning to think they'd been abducted by aliens!

Many thanks, Susan
