Henry HILL, Wexford

Hi, I'm new at this. So, here goes. Does anyone have any information on a Henry Hill(my grandfather). He was a cobbler, a chicken and pig farmer, and eventually owned a shop in the village of Ballycanew Co. Wexford Ireland. I want to know about his parents, if possible, where they lived. I think the parish church was St. Mogues.

You will need to give us an idea of dates before we can find information or suggest where you can search next. This will determine what sources are, and aren't, available such as census records,civil marriage records, etc.

Henry Hill( grandfather) had a shop in Ballycanew around 1940 until 1967 approx. I think he was born in 1885 or there abouts. He married a Bolton and she was a lot younger than he, by about 18 years. She had lived outside the village.  I would love to know the history of the shop too which was 2 storey and big, with many out houses. A six bedroom house is attached to the shop, I lived there until I was 12 years old. Before My grandfather purchased the shop it was owned by a family with the surname Bishop. My fathers name is francis Hill, he used to run the shop with my grandfather and Mum did all the bookwork as she was a Clerk.

In the 1911 Census, Henry is shown living on his own in Ballycanew, age 33, CoI, born Wexford.  His occupation is Poultry Farmer.
However, the 1901 Census lists a Henry at Main Street North, Wexford Town, age 23, CoI, born Wexford.  His occupation is Draper's Assistant.

There are a good few Hills mentioned in the 1901 Census, many living in Balloughter in North Wexford.  It should be possible to locate the birth of Henry, who appears to have been born  around 1878 in Wexford.

Is this your Grandfather - or did this Henry have a son Henry, after marrying?   If you think Henry had a shop in Ballycanew between 1940-1967 - he must have been of advanced years when he opened the shop, as in 1967 he would have been c. 89!

Hi again. My grandfather Henry Hill worked in his shop with my father and mother until about the age of 83. I will contact my sister in Canada to check if she knows when he was born. I believe that could have been my grandfather who worked as a drapery assistant in Wexford town.
  When I used to explore the shop as a child I remember the vast upstairs area of shop was'nt used anymore but large counters (benches) had bolts of material still there, so it was drapery too once upon a time. The shop was red on the outside with large white letters over the door and window " H.Hill & Sons". Would love to know where he lived before all of this and who his parents were. All of his sons went to Tate college in Wexford and his daughters went to Wesley college in Dublin.
In the early days, maybe in his 30s, he had a cobbler shop up the top of the town when the streets were unsealed.

Is it possible that your Henry was a child of Henry Hill who married Susan Bolton in Gorey district in 1874? 
There are births of three sons to this couple - John b 1875, Robert b 1879 and George b 1880.

According to 1901 and 1911 census, your Henry was born c. 1878.  Is it possible that Henry was another son of this couple, born between John and Robert.

Do any of these names ring bells?

This is great, but weird because I have the exact same photograph of shop. Thank you anyway.
 My grandfather Henry Hill married a frances Bolton, not sure when, I think she was 18 years younger than he. I know he was still single at 33 yrs old. There was mention of a Susan, I thought that was granddads sister though. I shall keep digging!

"Here lieth interred the remains of Thomas Hill departed life 23rd August 1787 aged 57 years. Also the body of Susan Hill his wife who departed this life Sept 28th 1812 aged 69 years. Henry Hill died April 26 1836 aged 21 years his father James died Sept 19 1852 aged 76 years."

a) Erected by Sarah Hill of Ballinough in affectionate remembrance of her husband William Hill who died October 28th 1880 aged 45.
b) In loving memory of Henry Hill who fell asleep in Jesus March 26th 1876 aged 80 years also his children Thomas and Grace who died young.

HILL. Table. Erected by John Hill of Ballymore in memory of his wife Jane Hill who depd this life April 22nd 1855 aged 47 years. Also his son John Hill who departed this life December 12, 1871 aged 38 years. The above John Hill who died 23rd Feb 1889 aged 82 years.
