Lookup request - Abraham Thompson Margetson
« on: Sunday 01 August 10 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hi
Looking for any help on Abraham Thompson Margetson born Norfolk 1838 don't know when he arrived in North Shields.  Died  7 Feb 1886 at sea - North Shields.  Unable to find any info on ship etc.
Also he was married twice - looking for info on first wife Jane.  He is listed as a widow on marriage certificate for Hannah Robson (2nd wife) in 1877.

Thanks - any help appreciated.

This looks like him:

1871, RG10/5114 folio 26 page 47
Chirton
Rudgen? St
Abraham Margetson, Head, Mar, 33, Boatman, Norwich (this is in Norfolk)
Jane Margetson, Wife, Mar, 40, Northumberland North Shields
Isabella Margetson, Daur, 4, Northumberland North Shields
William Robson, Son, 16, Iron Ship B somethin? apprentice, Newcastle upon Tyne

There is a marriage of Jane Robson and Abraham Margetson in Gateshead in 1866 Dec ¼ Gateshead, 10a 901.   This could be a sister of Hannah.  Although they are not suppose to marry the dead wife sister it did happen, or could be no relation.

There are a few possibilities for Jane Robson in Tynemouth.  One baptised 29 June 1831 d/o John Coulson Robson and Jane, one baptised 22 Aug 1832 d/o Michael and Margaret, and another baptised 20 Jan 1833 d/o George and Jane

You would probably need to find the marriage and see who her father was to determine whcih one.

Interesting the name John Coulson Robson as I have a relative George Coulson Robson born in North Shields most likely about the same time.

Is William Robson aged sixteen the son of Jane ,if so the census states he was born Newcastle and the only William Robson I can find is the son of William Robson and Jane, one at St Johns 25th December 1856 ,and the other St Andrews 1855 ,parents William and Jane Robson,

From the Register of Deaths at Sea :
Ship - Jessie Douglas, missing since 7-2-1886.
Abraham Margetson, male, 48, Cook and Steward, born - Stella, Last abode - 3 Trinity Tce, North Shields, cause of death - supposed drowned.

One of a crew of 14, all supposed drowned.

There are several newspaper articles about the loss of the Jessie Douglas :
eg. North Eastern Daily Gazette, Tuesday 4 May 1886.

THE OVERDUE TYNE BARQUE
Up to the present time, no intelligence has been received respecting the barque Jessie Douglas of North Shields, on a voyage from Pensacola to Liverpool, and the worst fears are now entertained for her and her crew. The Jessie Douglas belonged to Mr Hutchinson, Newcastle, and was commanded by Captain Wilkinson, 26, William St., North Shields. Several of her crew are Shields men. The Jessie Douglas was built at New Brunswick in 1865, and was 812 tons register.

Durham - Rogerson, Child

At 3 Trinity Tce, North Shields, in 1881 census :

Hannah Margetson, wife, married, 34, b. York, Yorkshire.

Presumably Abraham was at sea.

Radcliff,

It may be a third marriage. Margetson is not a common North East name, then combined with Abraham.

1861 census North Shields. 53 Nile St.,
Esther Margaretson, wife, mar, Confectioner, b. North Shields.

No sign of an Abraham, presumbly at sea. Looking at the 1851 census, Abraham is probably son of John and Ann Margetson, b. Tompson, Norfolk. Malabar has the marriage cert to Hannah, so can confirm Abrahams father.

Just little snippets from earlier doors in Norfolk...

On the 1851 census (1823-367-30) where Alan spotted Abraham aged 13, son of John/Ann, the Margetson neighbour is a Thompson family (Abraham's middle name).

Father John was born Tompson, which was in the Parish of Watton

Nearby on the same census ( 1823-386-13) is another Abraham Margetson, aged 11 son of Peter/Mary, in the area/parish of Ovington.

Watton and Ovington are neighbouring parishes.

The FamilySearch Pilot databases include church records for Norfolk parishes including the above two ( and easy to search than the Durham Bishops Transcripts as it indexes Baptisms, Marriages and Burials separately)

e.g. Abraham, son of Peter/Mary was baptised 10 May 1839 at Ovington Parish church.

It is likely that these two Abrahams were cousins ( I think)

Oops- pushed the button too soon....

There is anecdotal evidence that some folk from Norfolk ended up in the North-East of England, through the busy sea traffic of carrying coal to Norfolk.

Perhaps Abraham worked on coastal colliers, then became based in Shields ?
