1854..... m. Harriet Woods, Southampton, Hants

I assume you have thier marriage certifcate and it gives Wm as a Batchelor not a Widower and Harriett a Spinster  ???

I see from the 1861 where they are living in York Street that they have a year old daughter Kate (Catherine)

In 1851 Harriett is married to a Thomas Woods living York Street so she was a widow when she married William. As Albert is thier first child I am assuming then that Wm was a batchelor in 1851  :-\

Patrish - Many many thanks for your ongoing assistance in this endeavour.  :)

I know Harriet (nee Marlow) was certainly a spinster when marrying Thomas Woods. Woods then dies, and the widowed Harriet marries 'my' William Bailey.

This is a very new (started this week) branch of research for me in my family tree, and I do not yet have the certs that may assist us.

I cannot promise /my/ William was a bachelor, though I have no found no proof either way at this early stage.
What I did find on BMD is;

JUN 1843 - Marriages - Bath

Bailey, William
Bennett, Eliza
James, Mary
Long, Eliza
Thorn, Sarah

JUN 1845 - Marriages - Bath

Bailey, William
Burge, Harriet
Christopher, Sarah
Churchill, Caroline
Joyce, Elizabeth

DEC 1847 - Marriages - Bath

Bailey, William
Beale, Mary Ann
Bevan, Elizabeth
Pile,Eliza
Willey.Elizabeth

DEC 1851 - Marriages - Bath

Bailey, William
Grotton,Emma
Hely, Georgina
Kellow, Ann
Thick, Mary

I have checked Southampton, Hants, but do not see a viable marriage there in the period 1841-1854.

Forgive me raising half and eyebrow in interest, but I do see 2 William Bailey marriages in Fordingbridge, which is Harriet Marlow's home town. Coincidence? or is that where William maybe met Harriet?  :o  ???

The reason we need to know whether Wm was a batchelor or a widower is because I cannot see an unmarried Wm Bailey in Somerset or Hampshire born the right area in 1851   :(

Hmmmmm. well, thinking aloud (pending the arrival of required certs)...

I think the lack of unmarried Willaim Baileys is quite revealing.

Personally, I'm inclined to think it much more likely that he is indeed married at that time rather than the other possibility which is that he was living outside of Somerset/Hampshire.

You agree?

Thanks again, this is all very intriguing.

I have searched the 1851 census for Wm with the details of him living with a wife using all the christian names of the marriages you found on the BMD, living in Somerset and Hampshire and I cant find anything that matches.  :(

I think you will have to get the marriage certificate before we can go any further as he may have changed his occupation, maybe that's why he is not apparent on the census, also it will give his fathers name which will help to find his baptism.

Patrish  :)
