Hi Mike - hope you are well.
My brother (now the keeper of the trees) says
I think 'Trish' is probably on the mark. I (perhaps we) have been Assuming she was Ann Hill because we took Elizabeth to be the mother. We haven't actually got a baptism record or a marriage certificate to prove that she was Ann Hill. It has come about because of what I mentioned before - there are several strands of our family on this one 1851 census sheet, because the Elizabeth Blower living next door with the Jenningses definitely IS the mother of Charles Blower and Elizabeth Jennings, (and the census calls her 'mother') - and there is one of our Growdridges up at the top as well in house next to that - so they were all rubbing shoulders long before the families were intermarried. So I suppose we have guessed and maybe guessed wrongly. This means that Ann might not be Ann HILL at all. However if there IS one (as Trish has got it, and Independent Presbyterian sounds about right) then she is at least a strong candidate - and therefore v useful to have the parent names. We really are very short of records and have been going on the census rather too 'bravely' Keep at it I think your friends may help to unpick this mystery. Sorry to set a false trail, but if it leads to the right one it won't all be in vain.

So maybe we have to rethink this one a bit.
My brain can't cope with all this!

Greeting’s Again. Rev’d Mother.

I too believe Trish may be on the right track……..

When you look at the Christian names of the children on that 1851 Census return
Knowing how there was strict rota in naming children back then
The eldest Child is named........ Catherine…….

Hi Revmother,
Please dont go into a panic!
You are definitely on the right track up to the Marriage of Charles and Ann.

What we know thanks to Mike;

Charles BLOWER Married Ann HILL 1834, Hinkley

Deaths of CHARLES and ANN and their ages at Burial

Death/Burial of Elizabeth HILL and age at Burial (unknown at this stage if she is Anns Mother or how she is related)

Possible Christening of Ann HILL 1811 to THOMAS and CATHERINE
( If this is correct Thomas may be Elizabeths Son)

So if I have this right the Elizabeth BLOWER age 71 living with the Jennings is the Mother of Charles Blower and Elizabeth Jennings?

Trish :)

We have been unable to find any of them in the 1841 Census. Is that correct?

Hi,

1841 census

Grove Street, Hinckley
Elizabeth Blower, 55, Stockingmaker, y
with James 30, John 25, Catharine 20, & Samuel Blower 20: and Jane Alsop 73.

This we take to be Elizabeth (Hancock) who married David Blower, Hinckley 2 Oct 1803, mother of Elizabeth (later Jennings) (b 10 Mar 1806, bp Wesleyan 17 Apr 1808), Ann (bp 12 Nov 1809 St Mary's), (James c 1810), John bp 28 Dec 1812, Catherine bp 1 Jan 1816, Samuel (bp 14 April 1819) and CHARLES (bp 29 Apr 1812). Don't know who Jane is just now. David absent or decd.

Meanwhile

1841 Spring Gardens Hinckley
Ann Blower, 30, stockingmaker, y,
with Ann 4, William 2, Mary 2 months.

This we take to be Ann (?Hill) wife of Charles Blower with Catherine (1835) absent but the next three sprogs present. Charles junr dies in 1843, but Ann junr later marries Jesse Growdridge and becomes ancestor of revmother and myself....

Ann's husband Charles (aged 39) and daughter Catherine have reappeared and they have all moved into Grove Street in time for 1851 census, now with Elizabeth Hill in residence with them, and Elizabeth Blower next door with Elizabeth Jennings & co. Hence the assumption, evidently hasty, that E Hill must have been mother in law!

'Blower' is pronounced (and occasionally written) 'Bloor'.

I love your sense of humour ;D
I havent heard the term "sproggs" since my Hippy days!
Yes, I had found all that also and agree that it looks reasonably good.
I spent a lot of time going through the Hinckley 1841 Census page by page.

I would be getting Elizabeth Hills Death Cert if I was you.
You never know what invaluable info it contains.
Eg Jane Purdy , my G/G/Grandma died 1850 aged 84 in Morpeth, Northumberland. I had only found her on the 1841 census born Scotland c 1766.
Her Death Cert revealed she was the Widow of Robert Purdy, Weaver of Chirnside, Berwickshire, Scotland.
That enabled me to go back another generation.

Thanks Trish

I wish there was an easier way of searching the census by address rather than by person - might then discover some of those gaping holes which seem to occur where whole communities fizzle off the map for a decade or two and just as mysteriously reappear later on - ! ::)
