Tanfield - William Simpson
« on: Thursday 29 July 10 11:37 BST (UK) »
I am interested in any information about the family of William Simpson, curate at Tanfield in the first half of the 19th century. He married Margaret Sang in 1828 and they had 8 children, all born in Tanfield: Joseph 1829, John Sang 1830, William 1833, Thomas Willoughby 1835, Margaret Jane 1837, Robert Lancelot 1839, James William Harrison 1840, and Henry 1845. I have the 1841 and 1851 census. By 1861 Margaret was a widow, and I cannot find her in 1871 or later.

Specifically, I would like to have any details of death dates and/or burials.

Transcriptions of the children's baptismal records would also be very helpful.

Hi

The England diocese of Durham Bishop's Transcripts covers Tanfield 1765 - 1844. You have to go through page by page as it is not searchable but you should be able to find most of the baptisms hopefully.

Go to browse our record collections then scroll down to United Kingdom and the link will be there for the BT's

Thank you, Evie and Claire. I now have the Bishop's Transcripts of all the baptisms except Henry's, and the burials of Mary and James. As a bonus, it also seems that William's father Joseph was also a clergyman in Tanfield.

Still in need of the MI and/or burials of William himself and his wife Margaret.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much indeed! It does help, to the extent that it confirm's William's father's name and occupation, and in that I now have the inscription. It is disappointing because it doesn't tell me when William and Margaret died.

I suppose I'll have to see if there are burial records in the 1850s and 1860s.

Many thanks.
