Gorry's or Gorrie's from Westmeath
« on: Friday 04 September 09 09:56 BST (UK) »
New to searching family history, but have managed to trace my fathers side back to Thomas Gorry from Westmeath Ireland.

From an 1849 marriage certificate;
At the time he was 27 years old and married Julia Crowley in islington London. His fathers name is also listed on the certificate as Thomas Gorry.

In the 1861 English census he gives his place of birth as Westmeath Ireland.
Childrens names on the 1861 census are Thomas, John, Edward, Julia, James, Catherine.

In the 1871 English census additional childrens names are Francis, Joseph & Charles

I am hoping that the childrens names are family names passed down through the generations, as some of them crop up quite often in the family. And that this might lead to a connection with someone on here

Full Civil registration began here in Ireland in 1864 so a bit too late to include any details of Thomas and family.   An index to Irish Civil Registrations can be searched on the familysearch website at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Certs can be ordered from the GRO using the details from the index -  www.groireland.ie

To search for earlier parish records you need to know a religion and location (usually parish or townland). Parish records for some Irish counties are available on the Irish Family History Foundation Website at : http://www.irish-roots.ie - the records on this website are transcripts and cost €5 each to view.

A source for locating families around 1850/60s is Griffith's Valuation, which was a land taxation survey. It's available here : http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php
(this only includes heads of households)

The full 1911 census is available online on the National Archives website, at : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ it includes a number of Gorry entries in Co. Westmeath. Maybe these could be a starting point to narrow down a location.

Gorry's or Gorrie's from Westmeath

My Great Great Grandfather was named Thomas Gorry and place of birth was Westmeath Ireland.
This information is from english census records and an 1849 english marriage certificate

He would have been born 1822 or therabouts. On his marriage certificate his fathers name and profession is listed as Thomas and profession Farmer. His father did not witness the marriage so I can only assume he was either dead or still in Ireland at the time

Any likely relatives out there in the great wide world please get in touch

Dave

I have revised the surname to either Gorry or Gorrie as it is confusing as to which is the correct original version from Ireland, as the marriage certificate only carries the mark of Thomas

Any suggestions are welcome
