Hi

There were no birth or marriage certificates for that period - only entries in parish registers

Have you already tried

Hello,

Thanks for the tips...realised that it was John Wesley Dall, so missed the Dall out, but that Lancashire site is excellent.

Marriage: 20 Mar 1810 St Andrew, Leyland, Lancashire, England
John Dall - Callico manufacturer of Parish of Blackburn
Eliza Banning - Spinster of Leyland
    Witness: James Lomax; Mary Bartholomew
Married by Licence by: N. Rigby Baldwin Vicar
    Register: Marriages 1793 - 1812, Page 294, Entry 1179

Many thanks,

David

Hello, I am a new member from South Africa.  I am a descendant of the Dalls and can add the following if you are still searching. As stated John Wesley Dall (son of Robert Dall an early methodist preacher and Margaret Kayll) married Elizabeth Banning.  They had a son James Kayll Dall (amongst other children)who married Margaret Holme Slater in dec 1853.  They had 11 children.  The family moved to the Cape Colony in 1875 where James became head master of the Graaff Reinet college.  They later moved to Fort Beaufort.  One of their daughters Emily Francis married a Thomas Alfred William Creighton (Son of Alfred Archibald Creighton and Sarah Elizabeth Clarke).  One of their sons Reginald was my father.  The Creightons originated in Scotland and moved to Lancashire where the Clarkes seem to have originated. (I am still trying to trace this branch.
I have quite a lot of other information.
Hope to hear from you.
Denis

Greetings,
I have been busy with my family tree "Creighton"on and off for a long while now, and just by chance came across this web site, and got very excited, having read your post. the names Slater, Thomas Alfred Archibald Creighton, Alfred Archibald William Creighton, all ring a bell! his son Vernon Archibald Creighton as far as I know was killed in the great war, his brother was my Grand father Leslie Wallis Creighton, and his son (my late father was Vernon Leslie Creighton) I know my grand father was born in Bloemfontein. to date I have not been able to get further the my grand father, I do hope that this will pan out, and look forward to further exchange of info.
Regards
Les.

Hi Les,
Hope you got my reply.  This is definately the same family.  Your grandfather Leslie was my uncle as he was my fathers second brother.  The eldest brother Vernon was killed at the Battle of Butte de Warlen Court.  I found a most interesting and moving article published int he South African military journal quoting from a diary maintained by one of Vernons comrades even desribing the moment they "went over the top" and Vernon was not seen again.
I have been able to gather a huge amount of information on the Creighton family as well as the other branches the Dalls going back to the 1400's and including a Rev Robert who was a travelling preacher of John Wesley the founder of Methodism.  Roberts grandson Dr. James Kayll Dall came to the Cape with his huge family and one of his daughers Emily Frances married into the Creighton family in Fort Beaufort.
The first Creighton to come to South Africa was Alfred Archibald Creighton who came over in 1861 with the10th foot regiment.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Clarke in Fort Beaufort in 1863 and they had a child Thomas Alfred William Creighton who was the father of your Leslie and my father Reginald Kayll Creighton.
The Clarkes the other major branch of the family were also Military people.  The father of Sarah Elizabeth Clarke, Thomas Clarke, was born in Grahamstown in 1823 to Thomas Clarke a private in the 6th Regiment.  The regiment moved to Bombay in 1826 and Thomas jnr joined hte same regiment as a "boy" in 1837.  He stayed with the regiment until about 1857 after a successful career rising to colour sergeant and having fought in the 7th and 8th frontier wars.  When he retired from the military he joined the civil service living in Fort Beaufort where he became chief constable.
I have a huge amount of material on all these branches in South Africa and England and Scotland.
I look forward to sharing with you and others who may be connected.
Denis Creighton

Hi Denis, I am researching the Dall side of my cousin's family and have gone back to John Dall but would appreciate any info you may be able to provide for his ancestors. He married Margaret Burnet but this is as far as I've been able to go. Also would be interested in any info on the Kayll side. I have James Kayll's mother as Margaret Douglas and Jane Cochran's father as James Cochran but that is all I have. Can you help me at all? Look forward to hearing from you :)
