KIRWAN / COSGRAVE / SHIEL
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 22:38 BST (UK) »
My Mother was Catherine Kirwan b. 1920 in BannyKnave, Loughrea, Co. Galway.  Her Father was Martin Kirwan b. 1875 & Mother was Margaret Cosgrave b. 1882.

Any help going back further would be very, very welcome :) :)

would Martin and Margaret have been married by the time of the 1911 census ?

I dont see a place in Co. Galway named Bannyknave... you can check to townland database at www.thecore.com/seanruad so see if any others seem possible.

Hi Shane, Believe they were married around 1907.

BaunyKnav was in Ballinakill, Loughrea - as shown on my Mother's birth certificate..   Have looked at the website and very near are Duniry, Kylebrack, Portumna... stange, was in Ballinakill a few years ago

There doesn't seem to be a townland named Ballinakill near to Loughrea either - they could be 'unofficial' names.

Where would BaunyKnav/Ballinakill be located in relation to Loughrea town ?

There's no sign yet of any marriage for Martin Kirwan around the time you mentioned near to Loughrea or anywhere Co. Galway. I am hoping that maybe finding them on the 1911 census would give some clues.

Here's the Kerwin family in 1911-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Drumkeary/Ballnyknav/465485/

Added- The townland is Banuyknav according to www.seanruad but looks like Baunyknav on census form.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

thanks...

checking the building return, it looks like the townland has been mistranscribed and is looks like Baunyknav. I dont see this on the townland database..

added : very strange spelling for an Irish townland.. looks like a bit like a typo!

found it on the 1st edition OSI Map (c1820s/1840s) - it's about 10km to the north of Woodford town and about 1km south of Inchy - see Baunyknav townland

(click on historic 6" option to the right, or press 6 to see the correct map)

edit : here's the townland shown on a modern google map in relation to Woodford - you have to zoom right in on the B marker to see the placename - Woodford to Baunyknav
