Derbyshire War Memorials
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 21:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

This may not be the correct place to put this request, but I am looing for information on a Derbyshire war memorial.
My cousin in Canada has seen a photograph of her grandfather and uncle looking at a war memorial somewhere in Derbyshire and the family rumour is that there are 4 brothers names on this memorial. Unfortunately we know no more than that.
So my question is does anybody know of a war memorial in Derbyshire that has 4 family members on it, the family name could possibly be Rose or Hickton and it could be WW1 or WW2 or possibly even the BOER war.

I would appreciate any help on this.
Dave

Hi

This site might be worth looking through, failing that if you could post the photograph someone may recognise the memorial.

Hi Evie

Thanks for replying, unfortunately the photograph is not available at the moment, and locating this memorial is part of a bigger query that we have.
My cousins Grandfather (Arthur Rose) came from Sawley in Derbyshire, but we can find nothing about his paternal grandparents or aunts and uncles. We have a photograph of the family but nobody can identify the sitters except Arthurs father Henry Rose.
We are unable to find Henry on any census pre 1881, and on his marriage certificate (1879) his age is given as 24. Correlating the ages and census birth place (West Bromwich) we can't find a birth record or what we believe is the correct family, so we are trying to attack the problem from a different angle.

I have loked at the site you mentioned, I couldn't find any memorial with what appears to be more than two brothers on.

Many thanks
Dave

Hi

I now understand that the war memorial in question is in Midland St Derby outside the Midland Railway station. I would be grateful if anyone help with the names on this memorial and my cousin in Canada is certain the names are Rose.

Many thanks
Dave

Dave - there's a UK National Inventory of War Memorials which list the cenotaph on Midland Road Derby:
http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.893/fromUkniwmSearch/1
This is a memorial to men who had a railway collection.

There are several other memorials listed at the station itself - unfortunately the database for name searches is no longer accessible.

I've not been able to find a listing or image that shows the names on the memorial - here's a couple of photos:

If you do a search on "Midland Railway War Memorial" there are other pictures online - I also found this link which looks relevant

Hi

I have now received a scan of the photograph of my cousins grandfather standing beside a war memorial in Derbyshire, I now know it is not the Midland Railway memorial in Midland St Derby.

Can anybody identify this memorial for me, it is in Derbyshire apparently. I'm sorry the quality and sixe of the scan isn't the best but it is from a very small 1960's photograph.

Many thanks
Dave

Hi

Pity the photo is so small. I found this which looks similar in shape.

Hi

Many thanks for that, it does indeed appear to be the same memorial, do you have any idea where I could get a list of names that appear on it?

Many thanks
Dave
