Stansted House
« on: Sunday 25 July 10 14:43 BST (UK) »
Hi everybody,

I'm looking for a photo of and information about Stansted HOUSE in either Stansted or Bishops Stortford where William Fuller Maitland, Esq and his family lived in the 1850s and 1860s before he rebuilt Stansted HALL which is now part of Arthur Findlay College.

There's a lot of information about Stansted Hall, but I'm more interested in where he lived before. I can find Stansted House in Bishops Stortford reg district in lots of census records, but can't find it on any current maps. I think it might have been on Elsenham Road.

Can anyone help me find it?

thanks
-Claire

but can't find it on any current maps.

I expect it disappeared under the airport then.

Thanks for the replies!

The Stansted House pictured on wikipedia is unfortunately the one located in West Sussex. I've found lots of info about the Maitland family but my interest is in his house as I have an ancestor who worked as a housemaid  there in the 1850s and 1860s  :)

She had left the Maitland's employ before Stansted Hall was completed. It's frustrating that no pictures of Stansted House seem to exist, even if it was demolished to make room for the airport  >:(

thanks again for the posts

I've discovered a little bit more about the house.....

Sir Thomas Jackson, a banker, purchased Stansted House and its hundred acre estate sometime before 1902, when he moved there in his retirement. At that point, Stansted House became the seat of the Jackson Baronecy. He died in 1915.

Maybe the name of the house has changed??

Thanks  :)

Hi Claire,

If you have not looked already the Essex Seax site is worth a look. They do
have a picture of Stansted House (1789).

Hope this helps.

Frances :)

Thank you Frances, I hadn't been to that site. I looked at the picture and it looks oddly similar to the photo of Stansted House in West Sussex... :(  Could the Essex property have been built as a copy to the one in Sussex I wonder?

THere is another record with photos of the Essex Stansted House but the pics aren't online and I'm in America.......so .... I will keep hunting and hoping something turns up

thanks for the help!
