Hi I'm researching the Fuller Maitland family at the moment and compiling a local history book on the family and their collections. I live in Stansted and have given a number of local talks on the family and their history.
I have some photos that were were taken around the time that Stansted house was sold in the mid 1920's. The house was damaged by fire some years later and another house was rebuilt on the site.
A picture of the house is in Paul Embletons book 'Around Stansted Mountfitchet' in the Images of England series.
William Fuller Maitland lived in the house from around the mid 1840's till he eventually decided to rebuild Stansted Hall in the early 1870's. Sadly he died just before he was about to move into the new Hall. His son also a William let the Hall out to Lord Gardner. In 1881 William married Lord Gardners daughter Evelyn and they moved back into the new Hall some years later much to the delight it seems of the village.

Thanks for the information on the house! I will try to find a copy of Embleton's book.

Cheers,

Hi Clare,

Yes I have a postcard in my collection which is the same as that in Paul Embletons book. The picture isn't great but I'd be happy to send you an image.
The other pictures I have are from the Hertford County Archive from a sales catalogue with their code B63.
I have just joined this forum to reply to your message so I'm just getting used to the format etc!
I'll get an image and sent to you when I can. In the meantime anything else please just ask.

Regards Roger

Stanste House is situated on the ground of Stansted Airport via the old Terminal Entrance and is use as offices.

102 Stansted House/Third Av, CM24 1AE, Stansted (Essex)  I know exactly where it is as  last year I worked up the Airportl near  Stansted House. Third Avenue, you can see it on google map just but, you cannot get down the road to totally see it, it is a cul-de-sac and a bus goes down their and turns around. picks up BAA workers and takes them or drops them off here.

This is about 3/4 of a mile I'd say from Stansted Hall and St Marys Church where the Maitland Residence was.  I have a complete Family Tree dating back many years, if you are interested.  Also I may try and help in your search for your relative if you give me some information.

I HOPE THIS HELPS

Michelle

HI Michelle,

Thank you for the reply! I find the story of this house and the family quite facinating. I'm not sure what family history I need on this line, other than a general idea of what life for a servant in this household would have been like. I'll look through my notes this week for that ancestor and see if I have any specific questions. I'll take a look at Google as well

kind regards,
Claire
