Oxford House

My uncle died 1922 aged seven months. On his death cert when and where died the address given is 17 Charlestown Rd Blackley. Above the door is a sign, Oxford House. See Google street view.
I don't think he lived there.
Does anyone know what this building was used for in 1922.

Hello,

you could look it up in 1911- it is listed as Oxford House there so you may get an idea from the residents.
Booth Hall hospital was on Charlestown Road too. It wasn't a children's hospital then but there possibly was a connection.

My husband's Gt Grandfather James Hyland and his family lived in Oxford House in 1922, it was a private house and they lived there between 1918 and late 1924. I noticed one of your surname interests is Dunn, James Hyland's daughter Florence Elizabeth married Herbert Dunn in 1906, is there a connection?

My uncle Bernard Dunn died May 1922 at 175 Charlestown Road Blackley, his father (my grandfather) Francis Dunn was born circa 1900.

At the moment I cannot relate them to your Herbert Dunn. Strange that he should die at this address.

According to the 1927 Manchester & Salford Directory a

Thomas R Henshaw lived at Oxford House, Charlestown rd

again the same person in the 1929 version

Nothing to indicate it was anything than just a house s LS2 stated

Just running an OCR program on a 1909 directory (800+ pages will take some time) so will check when finished

A lot of the houses on Charlestown road all had house names, this was a posh area at one time, The actual construction of Chalrestown road started at around 1904/5 and wasn't completed till around 1911/12. The odd numbers ran from the bottom of the road on the same side as Booth hall hospital

It also seems strange to me that Bernard Dunn should have died at Oxford House, do you know the name of Francis Dunn's father? I can't find Francis related to any of the Dunns in my husband's family.

Bernard Dunn's death certificate, where it states when and where died, the entry is: 29th May 1922 17 Charlestown Road Blackley. Cause of death gastro enteritis. The informant was his father Francis Dunn who at the time was residing at 175 Cheltenham Street Miles Platting.

On Google maps Oxford House is on the right of No.15, Oxford House looks the same age as No 15.

I'm the oldest surviving Dunn, the only information I have on grandfather Francis Dunn his is marriage certificate. he married my gran Nellie Hesshion 1900 they were both 19yrs at the time. In the box which asks for his fathers name and surname it has Francis Dunn deceased. this will be my great grandfather.

My gran remarried 1930 and on her 2nd marriage certificate, in the box which asks for her fathers name the entry is Francis Dunn deceased.(should not have been entered in this box) I take this to be my grandfather who would have been 29/30yrs old at the time.
My grandmother was illegitimate, on her first marriage certificate her fathers name is Hesshion
