Ayrshire Photographs
« on: Friday 23 July 10 15:31 BST (UK) »
I am a keen photographer and family historian from Ayr. If any one is looking for any photos of sites in Ayrshire and is unable to get here give me a shout and I will see if I can help. I have many photos of historical sites around Ayrshire and am happy to go and get others if it helps anyone in their family history quest. As I seem to spend half my time wandering around cemeteries looking for graves or memorials would be no problem. I will happily pass on any photos I get free of charge.

Hi,

Thanks for your kind offer. I'd be grateful for any historic photos you have of Ayr. I can give you an FTP account to upload them too. If you don't know how to use that it's pretty simple; just like moving files on your hard drive, but over the internet.

I may also like a few shots as I live near North Wales. Will be happy to send you a small fee for your troubles. The places I am most interested are in and around Auchinleck.

Have you anything on a place called Ramsayston, Colyton - I have never been able to find it on any map (not to be confused with Rankiston).   Also, Burnside, Coylton.   It may be that these places are now swallowed up, but would be grateful if you do have anything.  Another place of interest to me is Pluck Farm near New Cumnock if it still exists.

Ayrshire: McCormick (mack); McFadzean; Kerr; Brown; Paton; McGregor; McDonald; Moffat; Connel; Bone
Dumfries/Lanarks: (pre-1840) McDonald; Moffat; Bone; Hamilton; Hyslop; Sandiland; Bredwood; Kerr; Brown
Ireland (pre-1820) McCormick (Monaghan)

My family comes from Low Coylton but I have never heard of Ramsaytown but I will check it out. Pluck Farm is another one I will need to check out. I will get back to you on this one

Thanks for getting back to me.   A bit more information on Ramsayston which may help.   According to the '71 census, assuming the enumerator walked in a straight line, it is somewhere between Gateside and Gallowshill.  It would seem to be only a small area as there are only three households listed as Ramsayston.   Can't be listed or spelled wrongly as the family are still there in '81 with the address Ramsayston.

They also lived at Gateside and Joppa village.

Concerning Pluck Farm - it was actually Old Cumnock - not New Cumnock and a farm of only 4 acres.  I did find a reference to "Pluck" in a recent planning permission request (google search!).  It appears to be somewhere near the Dumfries House estate.   I also found a Pluck Row on an old census, which presumably was in the area of the farm.
Hope this helps - GM

Hi grendlsmother

You'll find Pluck Farm on Old Maps.

Go here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and put in the co-ords  253369  618840.

It seems to have disappeared by the 1958 map and it looks like there is a modern house on it today.
