Thomas Quittenton/Quittenden b.1819
« on: Friday 23 July 10 12:25 BST (UK) »
Hello I'm trying to trace a relative Thomas Quittenton b. 1819. Married Lucy Sutton in 1854 and father was a John Quittenton. 1861 census he's born in East Grinstead, Surrey/Sussex & 1871 born Godstone Surrey.

There is also another Thomas Quittenton who married a Lucy Colgate which confuses things.

Quittenton is a rare name but is spelt in lots of ways and it seems the Quittenton's avoided authority/registering BMD etc.

I live in Manchester and cannot get to the Record Office so any help would be great.

Thanks

Barry

Hi Barry

I don't know if this is any help but there are a lot of Quittenton/den records on FamilySearch Pilot site, including the 2 marriages you mention.

Thomas Quittenton aged 35 married Lucy Sutton aged 33, 10 September 1854, Croydon.

Thomas Quittenton aged 28 married Lucy Colgate aged 24, 22 November 1840, Tatsfield Surrey.

I did wonder if perhaps it was the same Thomas in both marriages but I can only see one Lucy Quittenton death on Free BMD. ???

I have a John Quittenton marrying my 2xGrt Grandfathers sister Ann Brown in Chenies Bucks 1841, he was born in Croydon 1817, could be a connection here.

Hello Maddie

I think there are definately 2 Thomas Quittenton's married to 2 Lucy's, they appear in the same census with different children.

I can find my Thomas Quittenton on the 1860 & 1870 census' only, they seemed to avoid census' and registration.

It may be that your ancestor John Quittenton was the reason my ancestor ended up marrying in Croyden, they may be related but I can't find out online.

The Quittenton's seem to be found around the Godstone area but move around a lot and avoid authority.

Have you tried the site www.theweald.org

Thanks

Barry

Hi Barry

I don't have a sub to Anc at the moment but from the index, are your Thomas & Lucy the parents of John 1856, Timothy 1858 & Phillip 1860 on the 1871 census. Am I right in thinking that the other Thomas & Lucy are in Kent.

It is an "orrible" name to research, I know I had a heck of a time trying to find my John & Ann on the census. They do remain in Croydon though until they both die in the 1870's.  :)

Are you trying to find your Thomas & Lucy after 1871 or did you just want to find his parentage.
