Thank you for that , Yes this is the children of samual Clifton and his wife Frances Augusta de irujo .. thank you for sending it to me . i hadn't seen such detail and would love any other info or if you can point me in right direction . I thought one of the daughters Isabel Clifton married doctor James Stockwell....so i think Charles kofod must have died .. I will research further .

According to this book, his second wife was Miss Fanny Jones

Hi yes thanks .. the illegitimacy gave her different names then she was baptised as adult in 1839 as Jones . now ...
 in 1861 census in hanwell i have the correct Clifton  family with Mary 42  as head ... thought it might be transcribed  fanny wrongly .. but the ages don't quite match up as Frances was def. born 26th DEC 1817 ... so now i am back to thinking Mary is sister in law . interesting as Isabel is named Mary as well.... always intrigued . thanks for looking . would love to know where Samuel came from ...

Have you found any trace of his army career? I have looked in a few army lists (1842, 1850, 1854) but I don't see his name.  Nothing in the Gazette either. Possibly he was HEIC ?

Hi the link you sent said he was formerly from the 67th reg. i had read somewhere he was a major in the 89th ... i have his will here and he died worth less than 20 pounds .. back in England in the DEC 1/41872 . doesn't say where .. he had had several leases in china <Japan and Hong Kong so don't know where it all went . I thought i had the family in at 5 bubbling well road in 1890s but now someone has contacted me and said their unrelated Clifton's had that address . i must do more research . Jan /Fred

An officer in the British army should have several entries in the London Gazette, on first commissioning, then on promotion, but I could not see any when using the name Samuel Clifton.  Could he have had other names?

It's possible he was HEIC but I didn't see him in the India army list for 1845.

The Bengal army had a 67th regiment (but not an 89th)
