Hi everyone . I was hoping someone could help me in tracing a family member.
 His name was John Mccormack . In the 1911 Belfast census he was 32 meaning he was born around 1879 and his birthplace is Glasgow .He was a shaft oiler and married a girl called Ellen around 1898,
If anyone can help trace him and his family it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks .

Suspect there might be quite a few John McCormacks born around that time in Glasgow area so you probably need to get more details.
What about his marriage certificate? if in Ireland will list father's name and occupation but if he married in Scotland much more detail on certificate.
Have you found him in 1901 census yet? 1901 Irish census is also on the same site as 1911. Scottish census records from Ancestry (transcription) or Scotland's People.

Married 13 years so should be listed in 1901 with Ellen and son Robert and possibly daughter Agnes.

Searching Scotlands people shows only 3 males whose name fits

"john McCorm*k who married an Ellen" between 1890 and 1900

1892 in Renfrewshire Ellen Docherty    
1894 in Glasgow Ellen McCambridge
1895 in Glasgow Ellen Sullivan

All 3 Johns surnames are spelled McCormick

You would really need to look at the full certificates on Scotlands people to confirm if any of these are yours and would then obtain the parents details which are also recorded (if the couple supplied them)

Based on the 2 Irish census entries a marriage in Ireland is more likely than Scotland. A John McCormack m.1897 Co. Down to Ellen ? which could be the correct marriage. Any one of the chilren's birth certificates would confirm mother's maiden name.

With Aghadowey's links to the Irish censuses, I wonder whether this is the McCormack family in Scotland for 1881 - everyone showing as born in Glasgow apart from father:

You certainly should be able to work some way back  Have a look here on RC for some guidance notes on researching in Scotland www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

As suggested by Falkryn earlier, you need to look at some BMDs on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to help you work back the lines. John's birth cert will include mother's maiden name and also place and date of parents' marriage. This will then let you work back to their marriage entry, which will include details of their parents' names, including mothers' maiden names to help you find their families.
