This is a Naval chap and therefore he would not be wearing the Sam Browne....

That is an Army affectation 

He would have been Royal Naval Air Service...

Gerald Barnett Todd b 17 Oct 1884 Swineshead, nr Boston, Lincs
I recall granddad telling me that he was in the Royal Naval Flying Corp and the army, and a search of the records suggests he was also in the Seaforth Highlanders, which is not surprising
