I am convinced it's the result of one of the numerous updates that Microsoft  have installed this past week

Unfortunately - when I did a system restore back to last week (12th July) I got an error message when I tried to access the internet saying that a particular file was missing and had to be replaced

I then did a system restore to last Friday (16th) but had the same problem so had to restore to the 19th

I don't have to actually login - I just double click on the frog which produces a message "loading your personal settings" and then eventually I get my desktop.

It's just a nuisance really as it's an extra step and delay to getting where I want to be

Sorry I can't help Carole.  I hope I haven't made it worse?  Have you stopped getting the error message by carrying out the restore to the 19th?

I think you are correct about it being as a result of the updates but it is weird that it affets you and not me - we  both are using XP and presumably are getting the same updates.

It SHOULD be an easy issue to fix - I've done it before on my mothers PC and my daughters.

Your solution didn't work for me either, although I turned the password off when I restarted the computer, it again asked for my password.

As i said, same as Carole, one day okay, next day the split screen/welcome page

I had something similar a couple of weeks ago. I am also a sole user but had no problem accessing everything as before apart from having to click on the icon instead of the screen going directly to the desk top.

After this happened I also started getting the Dial Up connection popping up (I went onto Broadband in Dec and hadn't used it since then)

Problem was, even though I had unticked the box for 'default connection' the darn thing still kept popping up. Eventually it got to every minute or so, that I decided to upgrade my computer sooner than later.  This one doesn't have a dial up so shouldn't get that problem anymore. Just got to learn my way around Windows 7  :-\ oh and transfer my gen pages.

If you still want to remove the login screen then here is how:

If frogs are not your thing then you can change it for something else.

Downside,
that looks very similar(if not the same) to what I've suggested and has been tried by Carole - it didn't work for her.

Try the second section

What if I dont want the Welcome Screen OR the classic prompt? Can I disable both?

Yep, they tried that too.
The TweakUI looks interesting.
Think I'll try and download that just as a matter of interest.
