Campbells of Uddingston
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 13:01 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on James Campbell father of William Cambell who was born in Uddingston in 1835.  Mothers name was Jane nee Eglinton.  Marriage certificate for William states that James was a coal master.  William married Janet nee Wilson on 23rd March, 1855 and became a master baker in Uddingston.  Family story is that Williams son, James, was cut off by the family for marrying 'beneath his station' as he married the family housekeeper.  Any information greatly appreciated.

Was James still alive on the marriage certificate 1855?

Hi Su and Sancti

The family's 1851 census entry (from FreeCen) shows mother Jane as a widow, so likely husband James died between 1844-51, from the birth of last born daughter.

Can't easily see a Will & Testament entry for father James but there is one entry showing for mother Jane on Scotlands People:

Jane Campbell, 14/05/1875, ALIAS EGLINTON, RESIDING AT FAULDSHILL, BAILLIESTON, DIED AT UDDINGSTON, WIDOW OF JAMES CAMPBELL. INVENTORY at GLASGOW SHERIFF COURT INVENTORIES, Ref: SC36/48/76

Thanks everyone for your help.  I'll definitely look up the info regarding the will.  Was it normal for everyone to have a Will at this time?  I don't know exactly what it said on the marriage certificate for William as the info was passed on.  I guess I'll need to look up the information myself.  Thanks again.

You are sometimes lucky with will & testament entries as very few left them. I couldn't easily see one for father James.

Not sure about the estrangement for son James from parents  :-\ He shows as the only child still living with mother in 1891:

Janet Campbell 58, baker b. Bridgeton, Lanarkshire
James Campbell 25, clerk b. Uddingston
Grace Wilson 55, sister b. Rutherglen, Lanarkshire

Address: Old Mill Rd Campbells Rd, Bothwell

Had father William died by now?

You've been lucky with the will entries on SP  ;) Father William looks to have likely died in 1887. Some entries for him on the index for Wills & Testaments:

William Campbell:   22/04/1887   BAKER, UDDINGSTON, D. 31/12/1886 AT UDDINGSTON, TESTATE   WILL at GLASGOW SHERIFF COURT WILLS    - ref SC36/51/95

A further entry for him with ref: SC36/48/117

Hi Su,
My search has taken me on the same path - did you get anything beyond James ?
