Trade Directories Stirling
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 10:50 BST (UK) »
Following on from a previous thread and some invaluable help I received there - does anyone have access to, or know where I could find online, Trade Directories for Stirling between the years 1901 and 1910 . I have a Robert Young working as a draper in the 1901 census then owning a shop in Yorkshire in 1911 and a family photo (on previous thread) which was apparently his first shop which he opened in partnership with someone else in Stirling.
The Stirling shop was on Baker Street next door to where McCulloch and Young's was situated. There is probably going to be some link between the two shops/owners but I'm trying to find out what it might be and tracing who owned them might be a good starting point.

Hello Hilary

The Reference Department of Central Library in Stirling has a few trade directories for the early 1900s. It might be worth trying there. They also have the 'Stirling Journal and Advertiser' on microfilm; it's indexed from 1820, when it was started up, to 1970, when it closed down, so the staff might be able to trace any references to the firm. The email is centrallibrary[at][/blue]stirling.gov.uk (Replace [at] with @)

They also have the 'Stirling Observer' on microfilm from 1836 right up to date. It's not indexed, but any entry re the firm in the 'Advertiser' can be cross checked in the 'Observer'.

Thankyou for that information Hannah, one day I night be able to get to Stirling but it doesn't look likely in the near future, still I'll keep it in mind and I'll e mail the library and ask about their charges for researching. I have found at some place s the charges are exorbitant - presumably to put people off asking.

Anyway, thanks again - at least I know there might be something there,
Hilary

The National Library of Scotland has many directories available to view free on its website.

Cook and Wylie directories for 1903, 1906 and 1909 (at least) are available for free download in various formats (including pdf) from internet archive (www.archive.org). Click 'texts' tab and type stirling directories into search box.

Regards

Sandy
