in 1861 James is here
 RG9;  2811;  128;  24
Westhoughton
52 Cheques
James 43 Collier  b. Tyldesley Banks
Mary    46 b. sherington
Rebecca 16 mill weaver power b. do.
Peter 17 collier b. atherton
Margaret   13 cant read her occupation b. westhoughton
Jane    11 do. b. sherington
Catherine    9 scholar b. (cant read)
Joseph    1 do. b. do.

thats a big jump from Catherine to Joseph

is this James son of Richard & Margaret ? different occupation but remember the mills were coming in taking over the cottage industry so if he went out of business at home and couldnt get employment in the factory, influx of outsiders,  then maybe he had to be a collier

and Sarah is still with the Robinsons in  Tyldesley

Jaywit my theory is Richard was born within 10 years of William in Tyldesley
Tyldesley is not a big town and therefore they are likely to be related but how?

i think the answer lies in Richards and Williams bp. but in the absence of that i am finding Richards family

Only just catching up with this thread but in terms of where people would have worshipped in Tyldesley before 1825 - it's in the Parish of Leigh. Not that I've done well with ancestors from Leigh but still  ;D
Any census information included in this post is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Especially looking for - Sealey, Rogers, Cannings, Box, Sheppard in Wiltshire; Virgin, Slade, Abbott, Saint, Harper, Silverthorn in Somerset; and Virgin, Tarr, Beer in Devon

And most especially the origins of William Cannings,  a Baptist, born abt 1791 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire
