George William CHURCH Victoria Australia
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 08:26 BST (UK) »
Looking for the death of GEORGE WILLIAM CHURCH born 1850 in Adelaide S.A.
Father Isaac Church.
Mother Hannah Craxton.

By the year of 1900 his wife Elizabeth Mary Church nee Meyer had remarried to Alan Barr in Queensland.

On George W. Church's father's death certificate George W.  is listed as still alive in 1912.
He lived in the Harkaway, Berwick area of Victoria.

I haven't been able to find a death entry for him anywhere and any information  would be most appreciated.
Many thanks Aileen. :)

National Archives have a digitised WW1 record for a George CHURCH, b Melbourne abt 1887.

NoK given as his mother Mrs Elizabeth CHURCH of Townsville Qld.  This name and address is crossed out and an annotation in different handwriting and different ink  that his mother is Mrs E Barr, "Rosslyn Villa" 6 Underwood St, Paddington, Sydney; the annotation is dated 24/10/16.  His original enlistment was dated 22/2/1915 in Townsville.

He died of wounds 5/8/1916.  His kit was returned to his mother Mrs E Church to a townsville address.  Unfortunately this notification is not dated.

His undated will gives all to his mother named as Mrs E Barr at the Paddington address.  Receipt for his medals signed by E Barr, 1922.  Looking again there is a record of correspondenc which states that in 1916 his mother was the person giving information re her change of name.

So it would appear that his mother was possibly using the surname CHURCH and living in Townsville in 1915.

His name is apparently on the Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France.

Hi there Judith,
Thank you so much for this information.......this sounds like it is one of Elizabeth (Meyer) Church-Barr's son as Elizabeth was living in Paddington NSW and died there in 1926. I ahve ound three children registered to Goerge And Elizabeth Church in Victoria the first born on 1872, the second born in 1884 and died in 1884 and the third born in 1886 this last George could be the one you found. I am going to have a look at the Nominal Roll for WW1 and see if he is there.
This a a very complicated family to trace as there seems to been different surnames being used. Elizabeth did marry Allan Barr in Queensland around 1900 so it's a bit of a mystery why she would be using the name of her first husband George William Church, and it is his death I am after he seems to have vanished from the records.
Many Thanks Aileen...... :D

Hi Aileen,
There is only one George William CHURCH showing on Electoral rolls in VIC (although he could be listed as just George)
He disappears in 1919 and I noticed on PROV there is a will listed for George W CHURCH in 1922. ((PROBLEM is that for me,,,when I click to download it loads something completely different))

Maybe someone can check the 1922 death and you could try the will (and contact PROV if it isn't working for you either)

Bored
