Hi there

Does anyone know what a brewer's collector did?  My great great grandfather was one in Tunbridge Wells andTonbridge in the 1850s and 1860s.  I've found out from various occupation websites that a collector was a "customs service controller", so could he have been the tax man collecting taxes on beer?

If so, not a very popular man methinks!

He collected money from the tenants of  'tied' public houses on behalf of the Brewery which owned the pub.

There is this advert in  The Times for April 18, 1860:
TRAVELER or COLLECTOR- To Brewers, Distillers, or Wine and Spirit Merchants, - Wanted a Situation in either of the above capacities. First-class references, and security if required.
