Princess Street Widnes
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows how i could go about obtaining a photograph of Princess Street, Widnes taken in the 1930's.  My Mother was born at number 10 Princess Street and for her birthday i thought it might be nice to have a photo of her birth place.

Also does anyone know why number 10 Princess Street no longer exists.  I understand that only part of the street has survived.  I am not from Widnes so i dont know the history.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

On the maps I have it's labelled Princes St.

On StreetView it looks like the end wall of number 24 has been rebuilt, the continuation of the terrace having been demolished. The houses around look like they were built in the 1970s or 1980s.

From the spacing I would have expected Princes St to reach Milton Rd, and the 1937 map on www.old-maps.co.uk shows it like that.

Since numbers 2-22 would have been the same type as 24 upwards, there must have been a reason other than "slum clearance" for the demolition. It's possible that the low numbers suffered the attention of the luftwaffe in WW2.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

I lived at number 6 Princes Street until the early sixties.

The houses up to I think number 18 were of old stock and were past there time, damp ridden.
The houses aboce that number were of better stocjk and are still standing today. The opposite side of the street was fully demolished and replaced with new housing.

Now I can remember the people who lived at number ten while I was still living there, as members of the family are still alive. p.m me if you want to know.

Hi, I wonder if anybody remembers the Couzens Family who lived at 43 Princess Street in the 1930/1940's or so.  In particular Arthur Couzens and Charles Couzens.  I would love to hear any memories about these brothers or their families. Thank you.

Thanks Jangeo, I can't work out how to reply to you.
