Help on missing gg grand father
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am searching for my gg grand father John McDonald (also spelt Macdonald).
He was born in 1892 Argyll Scotland. Father Charles Mcdonald. Mother Elizabeth Reid.

John Mcdonald Married Jean white 18 may 1918. On his marriage cert is states he was living in logierait but was presently at Barry Buddon camp, Barry Scotland.
John and jean had 4 - 5 children then his wife later remarried.

the problem is I can not find anything else for John McDonald after 1918. I searched scotlands people for a death for him and come accross a war service death certificate. It gives his name, Regiment no. S/22532. Corps 10th battalion Argyll and sutherland highlanders. Died August 1918 Killed in action. I have searched the national archives which has a medal card for this soldier. However on the death cert it doesnt give his Father's/mother's name so I can not be certain if this is my gg grand father.

Is there any way I could find out if this is my john Mcdonald?

thanks
sarah

Hello Sarah...

From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which is free to search......

The entry at this link has the same Regimental Number you have posted. It doesn't look like the father matches?

Hi polarbear, I have just noticed that on John McDonalds Son's Death cert it says his father is deceased. This narrows down my search. I know that john mcdonald was alive in 1918 going by his marriage and was dead when his son died in 1940.

I have just searched scotlandspeople and 10 possibly matches come back. 9 out of the ten had images available. I opened all 9 but they didnt match my John Mcdonald.
The 1 remaining match had no image available but stated it was a marine register / minor records. This was for a JOhn Mcdonald who died in 1919 age 27.

Is there any where i could find out if this is my john mcdonald?

Thanks
Sarah :)

Hi Sarah,

The only thing I could think of would be to contact scotlandspeople with the particulars of that one record and ask them about the missing image.
