A date please for this well heeled gent
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 16:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

I believe this to be my 3 x great grandfather, but an approximate date would give me more confidence.

Thanks

Leon

Hello Leon
you seem to have slipped down the board a bit however,
Harry Turner was at this address from 1882 - 93.The cardstock suggests late 1880's -early 1890's.If you can show the back we could probably verify that.

Hi Jim

I'll try and get a copy of the back, but your first estimate is exactly where I needed it to be.

This photo is definitely of my 3x or 2x great grandad but they both carried the same name. One was born in 1820 and his son in 1853.

Judging by the age of him this photo had to be around 1890 or 1923 depending which one it was.

Thanks

Leon

I would think the 1880s too. Looks very prosperous. What was his occupation?

Hi

Thanks for the info.

During all my family research this is the only branch that shows any kind of prosperity. My great grandad then went and threw it all away........

The Jones' of Islington were a well established family of jewellers, specialising in watch making.

My great grandad was lucky enough to be born into this great opportunity but appears to have done his utmost to alienate himself from the family as quickly as possible.

He was a definite black sheep with appearances at the Old Bailey, name changes, illegitimate children and bigamy.........

It looks like the family disowned him as there are no photos of him in existence.

Still, he's my favourite ancestor to research!

Leon

Much more to get your teeth into! Where was he in the family? Oldest, or more likely a younger son?

I thought he was either the oldest rebelling against his father, or more likely and as confirmed a younger sibling with as he saw it, nothing to lose.
