R.A.O.B. - Alfred Hunt dob 1892
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My grandfather was in the R.A.O.B. (Buffaloes).  I am desperately trying to find out more about my Grandad who died when I was 6 (I'm now in my mid 50s).  This really is a long shot but is there anyone out there who may be able to help or point me in the right direction.

Kind regards.

Pat

Hi Pat and welcome to Rootschat

Can you give us a bit more info about Alfred please so we can see if we can help

He was born in 1892 but which county/place was he born in

What year did he die and in which county.  From what you have said above - it was late 1940's 1950's /early 1950's 1960's but there is no match on the death index at the moment

What was your grandmothers christian name and maiden name

Hi Suz

I'm going to have to go back to school!!  You are quite right so I have edited the dates above

As you say - still nothing fitting that period using a birthyear 1890-1894

Hi - many thanks for your quick response - caught me on the hop!

My Grandad was born 31st July 1892 in Lambeth.  Before he met up with my Nan he lived in Stamford Street, Lambeth and when my Mum was fairly young, they moved to Bourne Road, Merstham, Surrey.  My Grandad was a Crane Driver for most of his life.

My Grandad does have at least one RAOB medal but it is now owned by my Uncle in Australia so I don't have all the details to hand.  I think he would have attended a lodge either in London or in Surrey (if one exists).  My grandad died on 11th July 1962.

Please let me know if you require more information and I will endeavour to get it to you.

Kind regards and very best wishes.

Pat

Oops - forgot a piece of information you requested.

My Grandad and Nan never married despite having four children.  I believe that my Grandfather had a previously relationship which produced at least one child and they may well have married by I've not been very sucessful in 10 years of genealogy research finding the elusive (first) Mrs Hunt in the marriage registers.

Therefore my Nan's (maiden) name was Haslewood (Marguerite Amelia).

Kind regards.

Alfred HUNT, son of Harry & Louisa Hunt of 7 Lambeth Palace Road
Harry's occupation is given as circus professional.
Alfred's date of birth is given as 29 Jul 1892. However, there don't appear to be any other Alfred Hunts born in Lambeth in 1892.

1901 Census: -

Baptism: -

17 Aug 1894 Holy Trinity, Lambeth

Alfred's service records (No. 9575 of Royal Field Artillery) have survived and confirm that he was a crane driver in 1914. He was in the Expeditionary Force and served in France from 8 Jul 1915 until 9 Sep 1916. He received a gun shot wound to his left leg on 5 Sep 1916 and was back in England on 10 Sep 1916. He was admitted to the 4th Scottish Gen. Hospital in Glasgow on 11 Sep 1916 and discharged on 13 Sep 1916. He was again admitted to hospital in Brighton on 24 Oct 1916 for 'wound of leg - thrombosis' and discharged on 30 Oct 1916.

His papers confirm that Harry and Louisa Hunt were his parents. In his description it states 'Indian Parentage'.

His address appears to have been 120 Stamford Street in 1920.

Bertie (aged 23, bachelor, Lance Corporal in Welsh Guards) married Agnes Mary Gooch (spinster) at St Andrew's Church, Coin Street, Lambeth on 8 Dec 1917. They both give their address as 120 Stamford Street. Marriage was by licence. Fathers - Harry Hunt (deceased), linoleum cutter and Edgar Gooch, farmer.
